Publication number: 20240054094Abstract: A data storage system for managing an operation of a solid-state device (SSD) includes the SSD, an adaptor coupled to the SSD via a first bus protocol and including a non-volatile memory storing a power configuration table. The protocol converter is configured to: couple to the adaptor using the first bus protocol, convert first signals of the first bus protocol to second signals for a second bus protocol, and couple to a host using the second bus protocol. The power configuration table includes power profiles for the SSD each corresponding to an interface type for the second bus protocol. The protocol converter is further configured to: determine an interface type of the second bus protocol, read the power configuration table from the non-volatile memory to determine a power profile corresponding to the determined interface type, and cause the SSD to operate using the determined power profile.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2023Publication date: February 15, 2024Inventors: Phong Thieu Tran, Anthony Hubert Welsh, San A. Patent number: 11640252Abstract: A data storage device includes a memory device, an internal power supply, and a controller. When the data storage device is in an idle power state, the controller is configured to electrically isolate the data storage device from an external power source and draw power from the internal power supply to perform data storage operations. The power utilized for the data storage operations while the data storage device is in the idle power state may be exclusively from the internal power supply or a mixture of the internal power supply and the external power supply. The total power utilized during the idle power state is less than a threshold that is relative to the active power of the data storage device or at a fixed value.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2021Date of Patent: May 2, 2023Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Daniel J. Linnen, Gunter Knestele, Kirubakaran Periyannan, San A. Phong

Patent number: 9582453Abstract: The embodiments provide a backplane for a storage device that is readily extensible to accommodate a range storage media. In some embodiments, the controller is provided on a motherboard. In order to support a different numbers of bays, various management riser cards are provided on the motherboard to expand the capacity of the backplane while still using the same controller. The backplane supports a serial addressing scheme and shift registers to identify ports connected to the storage device controller to allow for different numbers of storage media to be connected to the motherboard. This allows the storage device controller to use the same addressing protocol and software for any number of drive bays.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2014Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: WESTERN DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: John E. Publication number: 20150006814Abstract: A method for reducing power consumed by a storage array controller in a storage array that comprises a plurality of physical communication interfaces such as PHYs. The method may comprise monitoring each of the plurality of physical communication interfaces. For each of the plurality of physical communication interfaces, it may be determine whether a data storage device is coupled thereto and each physical communication interface to which a data storage device is not coupled may be turned off to thereby reduce power dissipation in the controller and reduce a temperature thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2013Publication date: January 1, 2015Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: SAN A. Patent number: 7123174Abstract: A compressor can compress an image by reducing the amount of data while preserving the information. Some compressors use run length coding wherein image data is converted into a series of run length code words. The efficiency of run length coding can be increased with the introduction of differential run length code words. The differential run length code words can augment the original set of run length codes. Differential run length codes vary from current run length codes by encoding runs of differences.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2005Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: George L. Patent number: 7003585Abstract: A high speed, serial interface employs a simplified protocol which minimizes overhead enabling uncompressed image data to be sent serially over a long distance in real-time devices, such as a color printer. Because the error rate experienced in high speed serial and fiber optic links is very small and finite, the protocol removes the requirement to retransmit real time data. The protocol for initiator device-target device communications includes an idle message frame for indicating a device is ready for communication; a control word frame for sending a data request from the target device; a control word frame for indicating a transfer mode from the initiator device; and a data frame, wherein in response to a data request from the target device, the initiator device transmits a control word frame followed by the requested data.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2001Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: San A. Phong, Kent A. Williams, Yuanta Kuo, Thomas H. C. Yew

Patent number: 6977741Abstract: Shifting a page image while it is still in compressed form. The page image is compressed into independent strips that are a full page in the fast scan direction, and a small number of scanlines in the slow scan direction. Then, to shift the page image, whole strips can be deleted in one margin and/or deleted from the other. If the number of scanlines per strip is small enough, the difference in a margin created by the change of one strip will not be apparent. This invention can be used to advantage when it is decided at print time that the output shall be in the form of a saddle-stitched booklet requiring two-up printing, folding and subsequent trimming of the outside edges to uniform alignment. Here, a progressive page shift can be introduced at the printer controller while the images are still compressed, instead of requiring the change to be done to the PostScript Master, which would require reRIPing or decompression, shift and recompression.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: George L. Eldridge, Mark A. Smith, San A. Phong, Farzin Blurfrushan, Hilda Gharabegian, Peter A. Crean

Patent number: 6272252Abstract: A method of improving the compression ratio of image data in the form of foreground data printed over background data by arranging both kinds of data pixels into 8 by 8 pixel blocks. All blocks that do not contain at least one pixel to be printed are deleted before compression. The deleted blocks will be entirely background pixels that will be overlaid by foreground pixels, or entirely foreground pixels that will not be printed because they are located outside of foreground masks.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1998Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: George L. Patent number: 6064492Abstract: A high speed image data interface between a print server containing a page description language decomposer and an interface card, and a printer containing a rendering card and a print engine, where the interface card is physically located in the printer case and is plugged into the backplane of the printer. The interface is synchronous and carries clock, page request, line request and reset signals from the renderer, and line valid, error and data signals from the interface card. Other communications between the printer and server are carried by a telephone line or local area network. The advantage of this arrangement is that the printer manufacturer can design the printer without having to design the interface card to match the server manufacturer's requirements.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: George L.
