  • Publication number: 20180081766
Abstract: The first computer receives a signal that a second computer is back online after being offline, wherein the second computer was offline because of a failure. The first computer takes a first snapshot of the storage, wherein data that has a higher access frequency is stored on a first drive and data that has a lower access frequency is stored on a second drive. The first computer determines a snapshot difference between the first snapshot and a second snapshot. The first computer transmits the snapshot difference to the second computer, and transmits the data stored on the first drive to the second computer. The first computer promotes the data stored on the second drive to be considered equivalent to data stored drive and transmits the promoted data stored on the second drive to the second computer at the same transmission rate as the data stored on the first drive.

  • Publication number: 20180067963
Abstract: A computing environment includes a home site and a cache site with nonhomogeneous thin-provisioned storage configurations. A file management system updates files stored at the cache site. Each updated file has an updated file size and a pre-update file size. When a resynchronization is needed between the cache site and the home site, for example due to an extended communication failure, the storage requirement changes for the updated files are calculated and a notification is sent to the home site. The notification identifies the updated files and the storage requirement changes. The home site sends a reply to the cache site. The reply identifies which files are approved for immediate processing. The cache site transfers resynchronization data for the approved files to the home site, and delays transferring resynchronization data for the unapproved files until subsequent replies from the home site indicate that the previously unapproved files are now approved.

  • Patent number: 9909772
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and system for dynamically controlling an appliance based on information received from a wearable device, to regulate the user's health. A wearable device is identified and configured to monitor at least one physiological aspect of the user. A controllable appliance with at least one sensor and at least one controllable setting is also identified. Health information of the user is received and utilized in generating, a user profile which comprises parameters related to the health of the user. Data from the wearable device and data from the controllable appliance is analyzed and it is determined whether the data matches the parameters related to the health of the user. If the data does not match the parameters related to the health of the user, then at least one controllable setting of the at least one controllable appliance is adjusted.

  • Publication number: 20180063149
Abstract: An approach is provided for securing a network-accessible site such as a bank, financial institution, or a user's home system. A request is received from a user of the network-accessible site. While the request is from a user, the system further verifies that the user is the authorized user and not an imposter, such as a hacker. To this end, the approach transmits a state inquiry to a wearable device registered to the user. The current state of the user is received from the wearable device, such as whether the user is sitting, standing, walking, sleeping, etc. If the system determines that the current user state allows the action to be performed at the site by the user, then the action is performed. Likewise, if the system determines that the current user state disallows the action, then the system inhibits, or otherwise prevents, the action from being performed.

  • Patent number: 9886440
Abstract: A method, computer program product and/or system saves an original logical block in a file system and generates a first heatmap reflecting access operations on the original logical block. After taking of a file system snapshot, and receiving information that the original logical block is going to be revised, a second heatmap is generated, reflecting predicted access operations on the revised logical block. The second heatmap is based, at least in part, on the first heatmap. Selecting a physical storage location for the revised logical block is based on the second heatmap.

  • Publication number: 20180018379
Abstract: Various embodiments for managing data stored in a tiered data storage environment, by a processor device, are provided. A data file is proactively migrated from a lower tier to a higher tier of the tiered data storage environment by using a multidimensional algorithm adopting an actual frequency of access of the data file to gauge a slope of a predicted frequency of access of the data file. The data file is migrated from the lower tier to the higher tier only if each of a plurality of criteria of the multidimensional algorithm is satisfied.

  • Publication number: 20180020050
Abstract: A middleware at a proxy node may cause a copy of a data object stored on a storage node to be updated. Copies of the data object may be stored on a plurality of storage nodes located in first and second geographic locations. A first processing activity for a storage node that corresponds with the application category of the data object may be determined. A first storage node may be selected for a first update based on being associated with the first processing activity in a first proportion. The copy of the data object stored at the first storage node may be updated before updating a copy of the data object stored at a second storage node.

  • Publication number: 20180018354
Abstract: A method and associated systems for a deduplication module of a database-management system. The database-management system, upon receiving a request to perform a transaction that will revise a stored database record, uses memory-resident logs and previously generated database-maintenance tables to: i) identify a first logical block that identifies an updated value, stored in a physical block of storage, to be used to update the database record; and ii) further identify a second logical block that stores in the database a corresponding existing value of the same record. After determining that the first and second logical blocks reside on physical storage devices within the same storage tier, the system directs the deduplication module to associate both logical blocks with the first physical block.
