  • Patent number: 10887416
Abstract: A mechanism is provided in a data processing system comprising at least one processor and at least one memory, the at least one memory comprising instructions which are executed by the at least one processor and configure the processor to implement a proxy server for hybrid geo-dispersed erasure coding (EC). Responsive to receiving from an application server a request to write an object, the proxy server in a first storage site splits the object into a plurality of EC slices. The proxy server stores a first EC slice in a first storage device via a storage server local to the proxy server. The proxy server stores a plurality of remaining EC slices in a cache storage local to the proxy server. Responsive to determining that network access is available to disperse the plurality of slices among a plurality of geographically distributed storage sites, the proxy server copies the plurality of remaining EC slices to the plurality of geographically distributed storage sites using geo-dispersed erasure coding.

  • Patent number: 10841315
Abstract: An approach is provided that registers a wearable device in response to receiving a registration request that includes a set of acceptable user states and a corresponding set of acceptable times to perform a set of actions. When the approach receives a request from the user of the network-accessible site to perform a selected one of the set of actions, the approach transmits an inquiry to the wearable device registered to the user. Then, the approach receives a current state of the user from the wearable device responding to the transmitted state inquiry and determines a current time. In turn, the approach performs the selected action at the network-accessible site in response to determining that the received current state of the user matches one of the set of acceptable states and the current time matches one of the set of acceptable times.

  • Patent number: 10834769
Abstract: Embodiments for managing a wireless communication network by one or more processors are described. The presence of a plurality of mobile electronic devices within a wireless communication network is detected. A device-to-device (D2D) connectability score for each of the plurality of mobile electronic devices is calculated. The calculating of the D2D connectability score for each of the plurality of mobile electronic devices is based on a security posture of the respective mobile electronic device, a privacy posture of the respective mobile electronic device, or a combination thereof. A signal representative of the calculated D2D connectability score for each of the plurality of mobile electronic devices is generated.

  • Patent number: 10754835
Abstract: A method and associated systems for a deduplication module of a database-management system. The database-management system, upon receiving a request to perform a transaction that will revise a stored database record, uses memory-resident logs and previously generated database-maintenance tables to: i) identify a first logical block that identifies an updated value, stored in a physical block of storage, to be used to update the database record; and ii) further identify a second logical block that stores in the database a corresponding existing value of the same record. After determining that the first and second logical blocks reside on physical storage devices within the same storage tier, the system directs the deduplication module to associate both logical blocks with the first physical block.

  • Patent number: 10725664
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, system, and computer program product for determining storage device weight values to use to select one of the storage devices to use as a target storage to which data from a source storage is migrated. A determination is made, for each of the storage devices, of static parameter values for static parameters comprising attributes of the storage device and dynamic parameter values for dynamic parameters providing device health information determined by accessing the storage device to determine operational conditions at the storage device. Storage device weight values are determined as a function of the static parameter values and the dynamic parameter values of the device. The determined storage device weight values are used to select one of the storage devices as the target storage to which data from the source storage is migrated.

  • Publication number: 20200236195
Abstract: A system and method dynamically transitions the file system role of compute nodes in a distributed clustered file system for an object that includes an embedded compute engine (a storlet). Embodiments of the invention overcome prior art problems of a storlet in a distributed storage system with a storlet engine having a dynamic role module which dynamically assigns or changes a file system role served by the node to a role which is more optimally suited for a computation operation in the storlet. The role assignment is made based on a classification of the computation operation and the appropriate filesystem role that matches computation operation. For example, a role could be assigned which helps reduce storage needs, communication resources, etc.

  • Publication number: 20200218464
Abstract: A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: receiving one or more suggestions which correspond to placement of data in storage, where the one or more suggestions are based on data workload characteristics. The one or more suggestions are used to identify portions of actual data stored in actual storage which correspond to the one or more suggestions. For each of the identified portions of the actual data stored in the first tier, the one or more suggestions is further used to determine whether to transfer the given identified portion of the actual data to the second tier. Moreover, in response to determining to transfer at least one of the identified portions of the actual data to the second tier, one or more instructions are sent to transfer the at least one of the identified portions of the actual data from the first tier to the second tier.

  • Publication number: 20200218325
Abstract: A processor may identify that an external power source has begun powering a computing device. The processor may identify computational data in a volatile memory of the computing device. The processor may determine that the external power source does not have sufficient energy capacity to provide the computing device enough power to process the computational data at a first I/O throttling rate. The processor may increase the first I/O throttling rate to a second I/O throttling rate. The second I/O throttling rate may allow the computational data to be processed by the computing device with the energy capacity of the external power source.
