Publication number: 20240024116Abstract: A total joint prosthesis that achieves non-invasive length modification and a method of using the same is provided. A gearbox housing within the implant contains a lengthening mechanism comprising a rotatable magnetic rod mechanically coupled to a lengthening screw through a series of parallel gear sets. The lengthening screw is coupled to an internally threaded implant neck. An external magnetic device containing at least one rotatable magnet produces a magnetic field. After total joint arthroplasty, the magnetic field of the external device forces rotation of the internal magnetic rod, causing rotation of the lengthening screw. Rotation of the lengthening screw causes the neck to either compress toward or extend away from the housing, adjusting the overall length of the implant and limb. This invention thus provides non-invasive means for post-operative limb-length modification after total joint arthroplasty and is useful in treating conditions such as limb-length discrepancy.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 15, 2023Publication date: January 25, 2024Inventors: Melanie Peterson, Sang-Eun Song

Patent number: 11854428Abstract: A tactile display device including a nodule having variable stiffness under a surface to provide a near-real feeling of palpation for a physician. The device utilizes granular jamming technology using pneumatic actuation to control a nodule that maintains its shape while allowing the modulation in stiffness. The nodule includes two hemispheres, a contact portion and an actuation portion, forming a sphere. The contact portion and the actuation portion include different thicknesses and/or materials, while the dimensions of the dimensions of the nodule are maintained. As such, a physician can utilize the device to identify the difference between a normal lump and an affected lump even if the shape of each lump appears to be the same. With the tactile display device, due to the different levels of stiffness, a physician can detect the severity of the lump.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2022Date of Patent: December 26, 2023Assignee: University of Central Florida Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Sang-Eun Song, Sakura Sikander
