    Abstract: A display device is provided that includes a display panel and a backlight panel. The backlight panel includes a plurality of self-calibrating illumination modules configured to provide backlighting for the display panel. Each self-calibrating illumination module includes at least one light source configured to emit light toward the display panel, at least one light sensor configured to detect light emitted from the at least one light source that is internally reflected within the display device, and a controller configured to control a current supplied to the at least one light source based at least on an intensity of light detected by the at least one light sensor.
