  • Publication number: 20100239840
Abstract: A fiber size composition contains a modified polyolefin, a hydrophilic coupling agent, a boron-containing, fluorine-containing compound, a blend of at least two fatty acids and a compound selected from phosphorus(V) compounds and sulfur(VI) compounds, the fiber size composition being substantially free of conventional lower oxidation state antioxidants and optical brighteners. Composite materials produced from reinforcing fiber materials sized with a fiber size composition according to the invention exhibit improved properties such as, for example, increased strength and/or improved color stability.

  • Patent number: 7585563
Abstract: A fiber-size composition contains a modified polyolefin, a hydrophilic coupling agent, and an enhancer with at least one of the following: a fluorine-containing compound, a hydrophobic coupling agent, a cyclic fatty acid, or at least two saturated fatty acids with at least one of said fatty acids having at least two acid groups. When reinforcing fiber materials sized with the composition are used to form composite articles, the articles show improved properties such as strength and color.

  • Publication number: 20080143010
Abstract: A coating composition that improves fiber dispersion and mechanical properties in reinforced composite articles is provided. The coating composition includes a chemical compound that acts as an emulsifier, a surfactant, and a melt viscosity reducer. In at least one exemplary embodiment, the chemical compound is an ethoxylated fatty acid or an ethoxylated fatty alcohol compound. The coating composition may be applied to the reinforcing fiber strand after a conventional sizing composition has been applied to the reinforcing fiber and prior to wire coating the fiber with a thermoplastic resin. The coated/sized fiber strands may be chopped to form chopped strand segments and then densified or compacted to form a densified reinforcing fiber product, such as pellets. These pellets, in turn, may be used to form polymer reinforced composite articles. In alternative embodiments, the coating composition may be applied directly to the reinforcement fibers directly after fiber formation under the bushing.

  • Publication number: 20040229985
Abstract: A one-step direct method of making a high molecular weight functionalized polyolefin aqueous emulsion is provided. In this one-step direct method, a functionalized polyolefin having a molecular weight of at least 10,000, a fatty acid, a base, a surfactant, and water are heated in a pressure reaction vessel to a temperature above the emulsification temperature of the polyolefin with agitation for a period of time sufficient to form an aqueous emulsion. This high molecular weight functionalized polyolefin aqueous emulsion can be added to a sizing composition and applied directly onto glass fibers in the glass fiber manufacturing process.
