  • Patent number: 8364148
Abstract: Embodiments describe registration in a wireless communication system. A method includes wirelessly transmitting over a WWAN a first registration message from a mobile device, wirelessly transmitting through the WWAN a second registration message to a WLAN access point and receiving at the mobile device access through the WLAN access point. According to another embodiment is a method for constructing a self-configuring ad-hoc network. The method can include receiving a GPS coordinate from a WWAN channel node at a management system and creating an initial topography based at least in part on the GPS coordinate to achieve a network connectivity with diverse routes between a plurality of nodes.

  • Patent number: 8340027
Abstract: A monitoring period is defined after a scheduled transmission period to enable a transmitting node to acquire control information that may otherwise have been transmitted during the scheduled transmission period. In some implementations the scheduled transmission may be divided up into several segments so that a transmitting node may receive and transmit control messages between segments. In some implementations wireless media access control supports asynchronous communication and overlapping transmissions. Here, a wireless node may determine whether to request or schedule a transmission based on control messages it receives from neighboring nodes. In some implementations data and control information are transmitted over different frequency division multiplexed channels to enable concurrent transmission of the data and control information.

  • Publication number: 20120309394
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for causing active hand-in of a device from a macrocell base station to a femto node, which can be an inter-frequency hand-in. The femto node can broadcast a beacon, which can be received and reported by a device to a source base station along with one or more parameters for disambiguating a target femto node. The source base station can communicate a handover message to the femto node or a related femto gateway along with the one or more parameters. The femto node or femto gateway can disambiguate the intended target femto node based in part on the one or more parameters, which can include applying one or more filters. Additionally, the femto node can broadcast multiple beacons to assist in disambiguation of the target femto node. Also, where complete disambiguation is not possible, the femto gateway can prepare multiple femto nodes for hand-in.

  • Publication number: 20120303360
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for using the hardware and/or software of the mobile device to obscure speech in the audio data before a context determination is made by a context awareness application using the audio data. In particular, a subset of a continuous audio stream is captured such that speech (words, phrases and sentences) cannot be reliably reconstructed from the gathered audio. The subset is analyzed for audio characteristics, and a determination can be made regarding the ambient environment.

  • Patent number: 8320358
Abstract: Techniques for resolving blinded-node problems are described herein. One aspect operates on the physical (PHY) layer only, which a second layer operates on the medium access control (MAC) layer. Both aspects involve having a node stop processing a data packet that is not destined for it so as to be able to reserve its resources to detect control and other packets. An apparatus for implementing the techniques are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8315271
Abstract: An IBSS that allows token passing for round-robin service of QoS flows is disclosed (an RRBSS). The RRBSS permits low-latency, reduced contention, distributed scheduling useful in any ad hoc network, but particularly suitable for high data rates. Distributed scheduled access is provided for flows through a round-robin token passing service discipline. STAs follow a round-robin order, or list, and are able to communicate with round-robin transmit opportunities during a defined period. Each STA in the list transmits a respective token to transfer access to the shared medium to the next STA in the RR List. The sequence is terminated with an end token. STAs maintain station identifiers and list updates are maintained with a sequence identifier. Techniques are disclosed to add and remove STAs to the sequence; establish connectivity lists (receive and forward), and maintain other sequence parameters such as bandwidth management and TXOP duration. Various other aspects are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8305948
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate coordinating and conducting transmissions to multiple stations in a wireless communication system during a single transmission opportunity. A holder of a transmission opportunity can communicate a request-to-send message or a self-addressed clear-to-send message to one or more stations to establish the transmission opportunity. Subsequently, data transmissions with respective stations can be initiated by transmitting request-to-send messages to the respective stations. At each receiving station, the source address of a received request-to-send message is compared to the address of the holder of the transmission opportunity. If the addresses match for a given request-to-send message, the receiving station transmits a clear-to-send message to the holder of the transmission opportunity in response to the request-to-send message.

  • Patent number: 8274945
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device that is capable of accessing different types of networks such as a circuit-switched network, or any cellular network, and a packet-switched network. During hand-over from the first network to the second network, the sender of packets/frames expands or compresses the packet-switched packets using well-known time-warping techniques. At the receiver end, the received time-warped packets and frames from the second network are appropriately selected so that no unwanted artifacts are introduced during playback.

  • Patent number: 8274956
Abstract: Broadcast or multicast traffic is classified into different types of traffic such that different types of traffic are transmitted over different sub-networks. In addition, different transmission schedules may be associated with each of the different sub-networks. A device may thus be configured to receive only a selected portion of the different types of traffic by only waking from a power save mode at the intervals at which the corresponding sub-network sends the traffic. The standby time of the wireless station may thus be improved because the wireless station may awaken less frequently and for shorter periods of time. Different sub-networks carrying different types of broadcast and multicast traffic may be implemented in an 802.11-based system. For example, a single access point may define multiple basic service set identifiers for a single wireless channel.
