The process includes providing a mPAO having a terminal double bond, said mPAO produced by the metallocene-catalyzed oligomerization or polymerization of an alpha-olefin feed; providing at least one of a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl thiol, aryl thiol, diphenylamine or naphthalene; and reacting, optionally in the presence of a catalyst or initiator, the mPAO having a terminal double bond with at least one of the substituted or unsubstituted alkyl thiol, aryl thiol, diphenylamine or naphthalene, under reaction conditions sufficient to produce the functionalized high viscosity mPAO fluid. The functionalized mPAO fluid has, as synthesized, a viscosity (Kv100) from 135 to 900 cSt at 100° C.; a viscosity index (VI) greater than 150; a pour point (PP) less than ?25° C.; a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) less than 2.0; a residual unsaturation (Bromine Number) less than 2.

The VTM based synthetic basestocks useful for fuels and lubricants include oligomerization or polymerization products of one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) having a molecular weight from 84 to 10080. The one or more allylic VTMs are oligomerized or polymerized in the presence of a catalyst under oligomerization or polymerization conditions sufficient to give the VTM based synthetic basestock. The catalyst can be a metallocene catalyst or an acid catalyst, e.g., Lewis acid. The one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) can be one or more allylic vinyl terminated atactic polypropylene macromers (VTM aPP) having a molecular weight from 84 to 2250 and having a terminal allylic vinyl olefin content of at least 90%.

The method comprises reacting an epoxidized VTM with an amino compound containing at least one —NH— group under amination conditions sufficient to give the composition. The epoxidized VTM is formed by reacting a VTM with an epoxidizing agent under epoxidation conditions sufficient to give an epoxidized VTM.

    Abstract: The synthesis of high performance polyvinyl ether (PVE) synthetic fluids using a Lewis acid based cationic polymerization process is disclosed. The polyvinyl ether fluid have repeating vinyl ether units of the general formula —[CH2—CH (O—R)]n, wherein R is comprised of a branched or linear alkyl group having at least 4 carbon atoms and n is a whole number representing the average number of repeating units in the polyvinyl ether. The resulting PVE fluids exhibit excellent lubricant properties, similar to poly-alpha olefins (PAOs), but the PVE fluids have the benefit of higher polarity than PAOs and thus have better solubility and dispersity of polar additives.
