  • Publication number: 20240100237
Abstract: According to certain embodiments, a surgical cassette for an ophthalmic surgical system comprises an irrigation conduit that is in fluid communication with a handpiece and carries fluid toward a surgical site. An aspiration conduit is in fluid communication with the handpiece and carries fluid away from the surgical site. An aspiration pump creates a vacuum pressure in the aspiration conduit to draw fluid through the aspiration conduit towards a drain reservoir. A reservoir couples with a pressure-vacuum source to manage the reservoir pressure. A valve is in fluid communication with the aspiration conduit and the reservoir, and provides one or more channels between the aspiration conduit and the reservoir. Each sensor detects a pressure associated with the surgical site. A computer controls the valve in response to the pressure detected by the one or more pressure sensors to mitigate a pressure or volume change.

  • Publication number: 20230270591
Abstract: An ultrasonic handpiece includes a piezoelectric element assembly. Control signals drive the piezoelectric element assembly simultaneously in a first mode of oscillation and a second mode of oscillation. Feedback of a resulting oscillation of the piezoelectric element assembly in the first mode and the second mode is generated. Based on the feedback, the frequency of each of the first mode and second mode is independently adjusted, as needed, so that the resulting oscillation of each of the first mode and the second mode is each approximately at its respective resonant frequency.

  • Publication number: 20220331508
Abstract: A surgical cassette for an ophthalmic surgical system includes an irrigation system and an aspiration system. The irrigation system is in fluid communication with a handpiece and carries fluid toward a surgical site. The aspiration system is in fluid communication with the handpiece and carries fluid away from the surgical site. The aspiration system includes an aspiration pump and tubing of an aspiration conduit. The aspiration pump generates a normal vacuum pressure within the aspiration conduit to carry fluid away from the surgical site during normal operation. The tubing has a larger cross-sectional area in response to normal vacuum pressure. The tubing collapses from the larger cross-sectional area to a smaller cross-sectional area in response to an occlusion; maintains the smaller cross-sectional area during a post-occlusion break surge to mitigate the post-occlusion break surge; and returns to the larger cross-sectional area after the post-occlusion break surge.

  • Patent number: 10631675
Abstract: A combination lid and straw for covering a drinking container has a lid, a straw having an interlocking portion, and at least one venting slot. The lid has a lid perimeter adapted to be attached to the drinking container, and a straw aperture having an inner surface. The interlocking portion of the straw is shaped to interlock with the straw aperture to resist movement of the straw relative to the lid. The venting slots are formed between the inner surface of the straw aperture of the lid, and the outer surface of the straw. Each of the venting slots has a diameter that is large enough to allow air to vent into the container, but small enough to restrict liquid from leaking from the container. The drinking straw has a proximal and distal end. One or both ends may be shaped to prevent a water droplet from leaking from the drinking straw.

  • Patent number: 9931447
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods are provided for rapid venting of vacuum to mitigate occlusion break surge within a phaco fluidics aspiration system. The aspiration system may utilize a positive displacement pump to generate flow and a vent valve to vent or moderate the pressure or vacuum level based on pressure sensor feedback detected within the eye and at the pump. Embodiments described herein provide a quick-opening vent valve that produces a quick-opening flow response upon angular rotation of the quick-opening vent valve. The flow performance at the quick-opening vent valve is improved by increasing the effective cross-sectional area of the valve at near-closed valve positions. In particular, the increase in the cross-sectional area is achieved by forming a concaving edge portion to complement a circular edge of and opening of a flow channel formed through the vent valve.
