    Abstract: A wireless communication device has an amplifying element coupled between an antenna and a receiving circuit, for amplifying a signal received by the antenna. A control circuit switches power to the amplifying element on when the received signal strength is comparatively low, and off when the received signal strength is comparatively high. When its power is switched off, the amplifying element attenuates the received signal. The control circuit may also control an antenna switch, causing the antenna switch to couple the received signal to the amplifying element with or without attenuation, depending on the strength of the received signal.
