  • Patent number: 9430003
Abstract: Retractable touchpad devices and methods are provided. In general, an electronic device can include a retractable frame configured to move between a retracted configuration and an expanded configuration. In the retracted configuration, the frame can be contained within a base of the electronic device. In the expanded configuration, the frame can no longer be contained within the base, thereby allowing the frame to provide touchpad functionality when in the expanded configuration. The retractable frame can thus be configured to selectively provide touchpad functionality for the electronic device based on whether the frame is retracted or expanded. The retractable frame can be configured to be retracted in a variety of ways, such as by including a foldable member configured to be unfolded and folded so as to selectively provide touchpad access, or by including a slidable member configured to be slid so as to selectively provide touchpad access.

  • Patent number: 9141234
Abstract: Pointing devices and related methods are disclosed that generally involve manipulation of a cursor or other user interface component based on inputs from a user. In one embodiment, an image sensor captures an image of the underside of a transparent contact surface and determines whether an object (e.g., a user's finger) is present in the image. Cursor movement information comprising direction and velocity components can be calculated from a single image by equating the size of a detected object with a desired velocity and by equating the position of the detected object relative to a fixed reference point with a desired direction. Thus, detection of user motion is not required, nor is comparison of successive image frames relative to a time reference. As a result, a device having few or no moving parts can be provided while at the same time permitting continuous cursor motion without repetitive swiping by a user.

  • Patent number: 7532925
Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluating the degree of work comfort of a user is disclosed. A pair of sensors detect myoelectric potentials of a pair of bilaterally symmetrical muscles. A waveform processing unit generates a synchronous contraction waveform by either using the smaller value between signals from the two muscles at a given time, or by determining the geometric mean between the signals at a given time. An evaluation unit uses the intensity or frequency information from the synchronous contraction waveform to evaluate the user's level of comfort performing a task such as driving.

  • Patent number: 7421293
Abstract: A stress-at-work judging apparatus, program, and method for judging the stress exerted on the subject at work such as steering of a vehicle by the subject. An myoelectric potential signal of the masseter muscle is inputted during an object work carried out by the activity of muscles independent of the activity of the masseter muscle opening/closing the jaw of the subject. The myoelectric potential signal representing a change of the activity of the masseter muscle and generated when the object work acts as a stressor of the subject is used to judge the stress. A camera or microphone is disposed near the subject to exclude the period during which the subject speaks or masticate by using the masseter muscle independently of the object work from the object period during which stress is judged.

  • Publication number: 20050277843
Abstract: A work pleasantness evaluating device and method for evaluating the pleasantness of a work of any type such as steering of a vehicle by a driver. Myogenic potentials of a pair of muscles symmetrically present in a human body, produced by a myogenic activity of the human body during a work are measured and amplified. From the time-series waveforms of the pair of the amplified myogenic potentials, a synchronous contraction waveform of the pair of muscles is generated. From the information on the intensity of the generated synchronous contraction waveform or the information on the frequency at a predetermined intensity range, the level of the pleasantness of the work is evaluated.
