  • Patent number: 6948465
Abstract: A variable valve mechanism has a switching mechanism for transmitting cam displacement to a first rocker arm from a second rocker arm. A camshaft is disposed obliquely above a rocker shaft. A first abutting portion and a second abutting portion are disposed in a dead space between an upper side of the rocker shaft and a side of the camshaft. The first abutting portion rotationally displaces in a rotational direction of rocker arms together with the first rocker arm. The second abutting portion rotationally displaces together with the second locker arm. The second abutting portion abuts on the first abutting portion from a rotating direction of rocker arms. In the switching mechanism thus configured, displacement of the second rocker arm is transmitted to the first rocker arm with reduced stress burden.

  • Patent number: 6918363
Abstract: The valve drive apparatus of the invention comprises an exhaust valve drive mechanism capable of changing an open/close timing of an exhaust valve, and a control device which controls the exhaust valve drive apparatus so as to release the exhaust valve during an intake stroke, independently of an exhaust stroke, in an EGR mode. Preferably, the exhaust valve drive mechanism comprises a first exhaust cam which defines the exhaust valve releasing timing and the amount of valve lift in the exhaust stroke, and a second exhaust cam which defines the exhaust valve releasing timing and the amount of valve lift during the intake stroke. In an normal mode, the displacement of the first exhaust cam is transmitted to the exhaust valve, and in the EGR mode, the displacement of the second exhaust cam is transmitted to the exhaust valve, in addition to the displacement of the first exhaust cam.

  • Patent number: 6886978
Abstract: An electronic clinical thermometer has a probe including a variable-temperature heater and one or more temperature sensors and may also include a heat flux sensor. Physical variables such as temperature, time rate of change in temperature and/or heat flow rate are directly measured at positions on the surface of a patient while being heated by the heater through a thermally insulating member. Such measured values are used to solve a heat transfer equation rewritten as lower-order equations. Measurements may be controlled to be taken at a desired timing such as at specified intervals. The probe for contacting the patient's body may be planar or in an elongated bar-shape.

  • Publication number: 20050010871
Abstract: A user interface (UI) in the form of a single navigable window enables a user to navigate to and between multiple different functionalities that are provided by a single application program. Novel use is made of a navigation model that manages the user's navigation activities to and between the different functionalities. Navigation instrumentalities enable the user to navigate among the different functionalities and include links to each of the different functionalities as well as browser-like navigation buttons. Context-sensitive command sets can also be provided along with the single navigable window. The context sensitive command sets include commands that automatically change as the user's computing context changes, e.g. as the user moves from functionality to functionality. The single application can be defined as a software platform that is extensible to receive and incorporate different functionalities.

  • Patent number: 6799286
Abstract: Methods and arrangements are provided that automatically display error information during a logon process or other similar process. The method and arrangements automatically display error information associated with a user input field through the use of non-modal display mechanisms within a graphical user interface. The method and arrangements monitor user input activities and automatically stop displaying the error information upon subsequent user input. The methods and arrangements may also stop the display of the error information after a defined period of time has elapsed. A tip balloon is one type of a non-modal display mechanism that does require the user to respond and does not interfere graphically and/or operationally with the ongoing graphical user interface supported process.

  • Publication number: 20040012788
Abstract: A measuring unit is placed at the surface of a living body. The pressure inside of a glass container is reduced by a pressure reducing tank, so that a subcutaneous exuding fluid is taken out at the surface of the living body from under a skin. The subcutaneous exuding fluid is allowed as a sample to be measured to reach a metallic film through porous molecular weight selective films. A light beam emitted from a light source passes through a prism, and then, is reflected on the metallic film, and finally, is received on a linear array sensor. A minimum intensity position on the linear array sensor, generated by surface plasmon resonance is obtained, and then, a resonant angle is detected. The concentration of substance to be measured contained in the sample to be measured is calculated based on the resonant angle and position.

  • Patent number: 6678724
Abstract: The present invention provides a common namespace for Internet and local filesystem objects. In a preferred embodiment, the common namespaces constructed by first accessing a namespace definition table. The namespace definition table contains entries referencing both a filesystem namespace subtree definition module and an Internet namespace subtree definition module. The entry referencing the filesystem namespace subtree definition module is used to access the filesystem namespace subtree definition module in order to define a filesystem namespace subtree that encompasses filesystem addresses. Similarly, the entry referencing the Internet namespace subtree definition module is used to access the Internet namespace subtree definition module to define an Internet namespace subtree that encompasses Internet addresses. The defined filesystem and Internet namespace subtrees are then combined in order to assemble a namespace encompassing both filesystem addresses and Internet addresses.
