Abstract: A cluster includes cluster shared volumes and nodes. A subset of the nodes are designated as being backup proxy nodes responsible for backing up the cluster shared volumes. The cluster shared volumes are divided into groups, each group having a number of cluster shared volumes that is less than a total number of cluster shared volumes in the cluster. Generation is initiated for a particular snapshot for a number of cluster shared volumes belonging to a particular group. The backup proxy nodes backup data from the particular cluster shared volumes belong to the particular group using the particular snapshot. After the backup, the steps initiating snapshot generation and backing up are repeated until each group of cluster shared volumes has been backed up.

Abstract: Synchronizing storage devices outside of disabled write windows is described. A system receives, via a backup/restore application interface, a list of identifiers corresponding to source storage devices to be backed up. The system enables a target storage device to synchronize with a source storage device. The system sends, via the backup/restore application interface, a request to disable any write commands to the source storage devices corresponding to the list of identifiers. The system creates a snapshot of the source storage device. The system sends, via the backup/restore application interface, a request to enable any write commands to the source storage devices corresponding to the list of identifiers.

Abstract: Object layout discovery outside of backup windows is described. A system receives, from a backup/restore application, a request to discover an object layout for a data object by parsing the data object. The system determines whether the object layout is stored in layout storage. The system sends, to the backup/restore application, the object layout stored in the layout storage in response to a determination that the object layout is stored in the layout storage.

Abstract: A differencing virtual hard disk is created at a recovery server. The differencing disk is pointed to a virtual machine that has been backed up to a backup media server. A configuration file associated with the backed up virtual machine is restored to the recovery server while the backed up virtual machine remains on the backup media server. A planned virtual machine is created from the configuration file. Virtual hard disk settings of the planned virtual machine are modified to point to the differencing disk at the recovery server. Parameters of the planned virtual machine are modified based on a path of the configuration file as restored on the recovery server. The planned virtual machine is realized.

Abstract: Handling aborts of backup operations is described. A system receives an abort request message corresponding to a backup operation associated with a source storage device. The system determines whether a snapshot associated with the backup operation is created of the source storage device. The system synchronizes the source storage device with a target storage device in response to a determination that the snapshot associated with the backup operation is created of the source storage device. The system sends an abort completion message to a backup/restore application interface associated with the backup operation.
