  • Patent number: 4875812
Abstract: A double retention pin assembly for securely locking a cutting insert in a recess of a cutting tool wherein the cutter body has an axial hole having a biaxial orientation, a primary retention pin is inserted into the axial hole along one of said axes and then angled with respect to said axis, and a secondary retention pin insertable into the axial hole of the primary retention pin and having the same angular orientation as the angled primary retention pin, said secondary retention pin exerting both a radial and axial locking force against the cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 4620822
Abstract: A drill is provided having opposed primary and secondary cutting edges extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the drill. The primary cutting edge extends across the longitudinal axis of the drill to a terminus intermediate the longitudinal axis and the periphery of the drill. The secondary cutting edge extends inwardly from the periphery of the drill to a point intermediate the periphery and the longitudinal axis of the drill. The primary and secondary cutting edges are spaced from one another along the longitudinal axis so that the primary cutting edge leads the secondary cutting edge during a drilling operation. The primary cutting edge drills the inner part of the hole and the secondary cutting edge drills the outer part of the hole. The primary and secondary cutting edges are designed to generate substantially balanced forces about the longitudinal axis of the drill. Flutes extend from each cutting edge for efficient and reliable removal of chips.

  • Patent number: 4449864
Abstract: A cutting insert includes a planar body member formed unitary with peripheral ledges of smaller width than the body member, with the ledges being configured and aligned relative to the body member to achieve desired rake angles, both axial and radial as well as the clearance angle desired of the cutting geometry. In operation, each elongated ledge defines the cutting edge of the cutting insert and during operation of the cutting insert, the ledge is consumed and thus generates a fresh edge behind it along the entire length of the ledge such that the cutting process may be maintained continuous until the entire length of the ledge is consumed. The cutting insert may then be indexed to the next ledge cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4411565
Abstract: A finishing insert for use with an indexable cutting tool is formed from a flat wafer of cutting material which is generally polygonal in plan form and includes a pair of opposed faces and a plurality of upstanding side walls extending therebetween. The juncture of the side walls with each face defines the cutting edges of the insert. The polygonal insert includes a plurality of radiused corner portions and is provided with at least one non-planar insert face wherein the corner portions thereof slope inwardly towards the opposed face of the insert. Each corner portion further includes a pair of generally triangular chip grooves separated by a planar central triangular land area. Each chip groove is spaced from the peripheral cutting edge of the insert to define a side land area which increases in width from the corner portion to its opposed end. In addition each chip groove increases in both width and depth from the corner portion to its opposed end.

Each corner portion further includes a pair of generally triangular chip grooves separated by a raised central triangular land area. Each chip groove is spaced from the peripheral cutting edge of the insert to define side land areas which increase in width from the corner portion to their opposed ends. The chip grooves increase in both width and depth from the corner portions to their opposed ends.
