  • Publication number: 20140110575
Abstract: A method of analyzing a geologic formation having a borehole therein may include operating at least one tool within the borehole to collect respective borehole dimensions at different depths in the borehole, and collect respective total values for a given element at the different depths in the borehole. Each total value may be based upon both a value for an adjacent portion of the geologic formation and a value for material within the borehole. The method may also include determining each value of the given element in the adjacent portion of the geologic formation based upon the total value and the corresponding borehole dimensions.

  • Publication number: 20130162440
Abstract: A downhole pressure pulse generator (138) and methods for generating pressure pulses therewith are disclosed. The pressure pulse generator can include an input port (1) and an output port (4) for passing a drilling fluid therethrough. The pressure pulse generator can include a constricting conduit (2) that provides fluid communication between the input port and the output port. The pressure pulse generator can include a control port (3) that inputs a control fluid into the constricting conduit. The pressure pulse generator can include a control device that generates at least one pulse in the drilling fluid by selectively altering flow of the control fluid.

  • Publication number: 20130144548
Abstract: A tomography system for determining properties of flowing multiphase fluid, comprising a duct having a duct wall and interior space within the duct wall for carrying a flow of the multiphase fluid and a plurality of sensors, which are electrodes or coils, at positions distributed around the duct wall on a planar cross section through the duct, wherein the sensors (electrodes or coils) are used for making a plurality of measurements of electrical or magnetic properties through the duct wall and the multiphase fluid; and a processor is used to receive measurement data from the sensors and to compute from the measured properties to derive quantitative values of at least one property selected from permittivity, conductivity, magnetic permeability and complex-conductivity of the multiphase fluid independent of effects external to the fluid flow, such as effects of the duct walls and the geometry of the positioning of the sensors (electrodes or coils).

  • Publication number: 20130083813
Abstract: A Brillouin laser having a narrowed linewidth, reduced relative intensity noise, and increased output power includes a pump laser that provides pump energy to an optical fiber resonant cavity to stimulate Brillouin emission. The output of pump laser is stabilized and its linewidth is narrowed by locking the frequency and phase of the optical signal generated by the pump laser to a longitudinal mode of the optical fiber resonant cavity. In addition, the resonant cavity is temperature and/or strain-tuned so that the Brillouin gain is substantially centered on a longitudinal mode of the cavity, thereby ensuring that the Brillouin frequency shift is substantially equal to an integer number of the free spectral range of the cavity.

  • Publication number: 20130075084
Abstract: Systems and methods for drilling a multilateral well using magnetic ranging while drilling are provided. In accordance with one embodiment, a method of drilling a multilateral well includes drilling and casing a mother wellbore, installing a multilateral junction, drilling and casing a first lateral well from the multilateral junction, and drilling a second lateral well from the multilateral junction using magnetic ranging while drilling such that the second lateral well has a controlled relationship relative to the first lateral well. The first and second lateral wells may form a SAGD well pair, in which case the first lateral well may be a producer well and the second lateral well may be an injector well.
