    Abstract: A volatile chlorine-containing organic compound, e.g., trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, contained in a vent gas as a pollutant of atmospheric air can be rapidly and efficiently decomposed into less harmful decomposition products by irradiating the vent gas with ultraviolet light having a wavelength of 400 nm or shorter while the vent gas is in contact with a titanium dioxide powder, for example, supported on the wall of a reactor through which the vent gas is passed.
