    Abstract: A pump has a housing defining at least one pumping chamber, and a plunger slidably disposed within the at least one pumping chamber. The plunger is movable between a first and second spaced apart end positions to pressurize a fluid. The pump also has a driver operatively engaged with the plunger to move the plunger between the first end position and the second end position. The pump further has a high-pressure outlet in fluid communication with the at least one pumping chamber. The high pressure outlet passes pressurized fluid during movement of the plunger between the first end position and the second end position. The passing of pressurized fluid through the high-pressure outlet terminates before the plunger completes movement from the first end position to the second end position.

One of the needle valve members is at least partially positioned in the other needle valve member. Thus, the injector can perform homogeneous charge injection events, conventional injection events, or even a mixed mode having both types of injection events in a single engine cycle.

    Abstract: A hydraulically actuated fuel injector includes an injector body containing an intensifier piston with a hydraulic surface exposed to fluid pressure in a hydraulic pressure cavity. This hydraulic surface includes an annular taper and moves within a bore due to the pressure in the hydraulic pressure cavity. Prior to the injection event, the intensifier piston is in a retracted position that partially blocks at least one actuation fluid supply passage. At the initiation of the injection event, the partial blocking of the actuation fluid passage results in a slower initial movement rate of the intensifier piston. The injection flow rate is a function of the speed of the intensifier piston. The initial rate shaping is accomplished by controlling the initial speed of the intensifier piston by at least partially blocking one or more of the actuation fluid supply passages.

    Abstract: A hydraulically-actuated fuel injector includes an injector body that defines an actuation fluid inlet, a first actuation fluid cavity, a second actuation fluid cavity and a nozzle outlet. A piston is positioned in the injector body and is moveable between a retracted position and an advanced position. The piston has a primary hydraulic surface exposed to fluid in the first actuation fluid cavity, and an opposing hydraulic surface exposed to fluid in the second actuation fluid cavity. A control valve includes a spool valve member that is moveable a distance between a first position and a second position. The first actuation fluid cavity is closed to the actuation fluid inlet when the spool valve member is in its first position. The first actuation fluid cavity is open, but the second actuation fluid cavity is closed, to the actuation fluid inlet when the spool valve member is moving through a first portion of the distance.

    Abstract: A jumper tube with improved misalignment capability comprising a cylindrically shaped receiver portion having a central bore that receives an electronically controlled hydraulically actuated unit fuel injector, an annular groove disposed adjacent each end of the bore, a resilient seal ring disposed in each annular groove, forming a seal between the injector and the bore and providing three degrees of freedom between the injector and bore, a tubular portion having an elongated passage in fluid communication with the bore and a conduit in fluid communication with an actuating fluid manifold and the elongated passage and a bolt extending through the tubular portion, the conduit portion and a portion of the actuating fluid manifold removably attaching the jumper tube to a head of an internal combustion engine.
