  • Patent number: 6522962
Abstract: A chassis control network architecture having an electronic control module mountable on a steering column subassembly is disclosed. A first communications bus is connected to the electronic control module and an actuator control module is in communication with the electronic control module, through the first communications bus. The actuator control module is further connected to an electric steering motor, and is capable of receiving a steering input command from the electronic control module and applying it to the electric steering motor.

  • Publication number: 20030019670
Abstract: A hybrid steer-by-wire and mechanical steering system for a vehicle includes two subsystems. The first subsystem connects a steering wheel with a mechanical link adapted to turn a first wheel of the vehicle. The second subsystem has an electro-mechanical actuator adapted to turn a second wheel of the vehicle. An electronic controller adapted to receive information indicative of the positions of the steering wheel and the first wheel controls the electromechanical actuator to thereby control the position of the second wheel.

  • Patent number: 6481526
Abstract: A steer-by-wire handwheel actuator in a vehicle is presented. The handwheel actuator comprises a controller operative to accept as input thereto data from the steer-by-wire system and generate therefrom control signals; a driver input shaft; a gear train connected to the driver input shaft; a variable stop motor responsive to the control signals from the controller and variably geared to the gear train; a feedback motor responsive to the control signals from the controller and geared to one of the driver input shaft and the gear train; and a stop mechanism attached to a housing and coupled to one of the feedback motor and the gear train.

  • Publication number: 20020103589
Abstract: A steer-by-wire system includes a steering wheel; a steering wheel sensor coupled to the steering wheel for sensing the position of the steering wheel and producing a signal indicative of the position of the steering wheel; a controller in signal communication with the steering wheel sensor for receiving the signal indicative of the position of the steering wheel from the steering wheel sensor and producing a signal indicative of a desired steering wheel feedback torque; and a tactile feedback device in signal communication with the controller for receiving the signal indicative of the desired steering wheel feedback torque and providing a corresponding torque to the steering wheel.

  • Patent number: 6424900
Abstract: A control-by-wire control system comprising a plurality of control device(s), each control device is responsive to, and configured to receive a control signal. Also included in the control-by-wire control system is a plurality of sensors wherein certain sensors are coupled to particular control devices. The sensors, each sense a parameter of the system and generate various sensor signals in response. A plurality of control modules is also included in control-by-wire control system. Each control module is interfaced to at least one of the control devices and is adapted to receive at least one or more sensor signals. The control modules also generate control signals for communication to the control devices. A communication interface of at least two communication networks provides communications among various control modules.

  • Publication number: 20020084757
Abstract: An automotive steer-by-wire system is disclosed that includes a first network. The first network connects a first set of controllers for controlling a first set of motors. The steer-by-wire system further includes a second network that is independent of the first network and connects a second set of controllers for controlling a second set of motors. The steer-by-wire system includes a third network that connects the first set of controllers and the second set of controllers for controlling the first or second set of motors if the first or second network is inoperative, whereby information is transmitted via the third network independent of the first network and the second network.
