    Abstract: A magnetic tape drive (20) employs trolleys (40) for moving magnetic tape between a tape retracted position and a tape extracted position. A trolley position sensor (104, 106) generates a trolley position signal: A processor (100) uses the trolley position signal to control a supply reel motor (30), and thereby prevent slack in tape during a retraction operation. The processor (100) uses the trolley position signal to determine a supply reel motor reference position signal, and then uses a difference between the supply reel motor reference position signal and the supply reel motor position signal to control the supply reel motor (30).
