Publication number: 20140004839Abstract: A method for transferring a data stream between devices on a network is initiated by one of the devices. The devices on the network include a first device requesting the transfer and a second device currently receiving the data stream via the network. The method steps include a first device determining a proximity to a second device. The method steps also include the first device initiating a command to terminate a data stream received by the second device via a network when the proximity is below a threshold; and the first device initiating a command to transfer the data stream via the network so that the data stream is received by the first device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2012Publication date: January 2, 2014Inventors: Frederick P. BLOCK, Dennis C. EPISKOPOS, Paul A. FULLARTON, Scott B. STEELE

Patent number: 4958341Abstract: A high capacity metropolitan area network (MAN) is described. Data traffic from users is connected to data concentrators at the edge of the network, and is tranmitted over fiber optic data links to a hub where the data is switched. The hub includes a plurality of data switching modules, each having a control means, and each connected to a distributed control space division switch. Advantageously, the data switching modules, whose inputs are connected to the concentrators, perform all checking and routing functions, while the 1024.times.1024 maximum size space division switch, whose outputs are connected to the concentrators, provides a large fan-out distribution network for reaching many concentrators from each data switching module.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1988Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Assignee: AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Jayant G. Hemmady, William P. Lidinsky, Scott B. Steele, Werner Ulrich, Roanld C. Weddige
