Patent number: 7850698Abstract: A trialing assembly for use during knee replacement procedures to determine size and position of a tibial plate implant as well as the size and thickness of the articular surface prior to implantation of the implant. The trialing assembly includes a broaching plate having a tibia engaging bottom surface adapted for placement atop a tibia and an opposite top surface, the bottom and top surfaces extending between an anterior edge and a posterior edge of the broaching plate. The broaching plate includes an anterior rail and a posterior rail protruding superiorly from the top surface and extending along the anterior and posterior edges, respectively. A trialing plate is configured to removably fit atop the broaching plate between the anterior and posterior rails. The trialing plate includes an engagement member extending from a superior surface of the trialing plate and adapted to engage with an articular surface provisional.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2009Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Assignee: Zimmer Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kristina J. Straszheim-Morley, Dwight T. Todd, Brian D. Byrd, Scott C. Lazar

Patent number: 6916324Abstract: A provisional orthopedic prosthesis having a first provisional component and an optional second component. The provisional prosthesis may be a partial knee prosthesis and is used to assess the fit of a permanent prosthesis having first and second components. The first provisional component has a size which differs from the first permanent component and is mountable on a bone which has been only partially prepared to receive the first permanent component. Providing a provisional component which is mounted on a partially prepared bone, simplifies the preparation of the bone for a differently sized component if the provisional indicates that the preliminarily selected permanent component is incorrectly sized.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Zimmer Technology, Inc.Inventors: Adam H. Sanford, Scott C. Lazar, Scott J. Steffensmeier, Richard V. Williamson

Publication number: 20040153087Abstract: A provisional orthopedic prosthetic component and a removable guide element. The provisional component may be mounted to a bone prior to fully preparing the bone for receiving a corresponding permanent prosthetic component to preliminarily assess the fit of the permanent prosthetic component. The guide element is then attached to the provisional component. The guide element is engaged with a surgical tool to position the tool for preparing the bone for the permanent prosthetic component. In an alternative embodiment, the provisional component is an assembly of first and second provisional components. After mounting the provisional assembly on a partially prepared bone, the second provisional component is interchanged with a guide element which is mounted on the first provisional component. The guide element is used to position a surgical tool relative to the first provisional component. Both embodiments may be mounted on a distal femur and define a single-condylar shaped projection.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2003Publication date: August 5, 2004Inventors: Adam H. Sanford, Scott C. Lazar, Scott J. Steffensmeier, Richard V. Williamson
