  • Patent number: 8707373
Abstract: An approach is provided for distributing multi-media information from a satellite broadcast system. A hub receives a signal from the satellite broadcast system, wherein the signal represents video information and audio information associated with multiple broadcast channels. The hub centrally demodulates and decodes the received signal for distribution to one of a number of access point devices. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the decoded signal represents uncompressed video and audio information corresponding to one of the broadcast channels. The access point devices convert the received decoded signal for output respective displays (e.g., television sets). The hub can also be equipped with an interface to provide access to a public data network, such as the global Internet. Further, the hub can be supplied with a digital video recording capability.

  • Patent number: 8243923
Abstract: A system and method for providing conditional access authorizations in a satellite-receiving system includes generating a conditional access authorization signal and an expiration signal at a head-end 20, receiving the conditional access authorization signal at a fixed satellite receiver 54 or at a mobile satellite receiver 28. When the mobile satellite receiver operates in a predetermined time window before the expiration time, which is determined from the expiration signal, a warning 434 on a screen display 432 is generated.

  • Patent number: 7379653
Abstract: The audio-video synchronization process ensures continuity of displayed AV data. To initialize the process, a transport processor determines whether an occupancy criterion of a buffer storing received audio and video frames has been met. If the criterion is met, the transport processor obtains an initial time stamp value from an initial frame, and a subsequent time stamp value from a subsequent frame. Initial and subsequent parameters are computed from these respective time stamp values, and are compared against each other. If the parameters coincide, the frame is valid, and corresponding audio or video frames may be decoded and displayed. If the parameters do not coincide, a recovery process is initiated. In either event, the invention makes it possible to achieve audio-video synchronization for both live and playback modes of a digital video recorder (DVR).

  • Publication number: 20080109854
Abstract: A receiving unit 28 includes a tuner circuit board 100 that receives a first signal that may include a satellite signal. The tuner circuit board 100 demodulates the satellite signal to form a second signal. The second signal is provided to an internet protocol (IP) and control module circuit board 102 that is separated from the tuner circuit board 100. The internet protocol (IP) and control module circuit board 102 formats the second signal to form an IP encapsulated signal. The IP encapsulated signal is communicated to a device 44 so that a display 46 may be generated.

  • Patent number: 7206501
Abstract: In a digital video recording system (DVR), a method of identifying the MPEG picture coding type of individual pictures of a GOP that is contained within a DSS transport packet, without parsing and evaluating each DSS transport packet. The picture coding type identifies whether a picture is an intra-coded (I) picture, predictive-coded (P) picture or bi-directionally predictive-coded (B) picture. The method facilitates implementation of DVR system playback modes, and especially trick modes by identifying and indexing the transport packet payload containing the I-picture (frame or field).

  • Patent number: 7164844
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing recorded coded audiovisual data to facilitate reverse playback permits the user to play back recorded material in a temporally reversed manner at speeds of at least 1X or greater by storing the decoded frames in a graphics accelerator memory of a recording system. By storing decoded MPEG video frames representing the audiovisual data in the graphics accelerator's memory, it is possible to display all the frames of a group of pictures GOP in reverse order. Instead of using the memory of a graphics accelerator, the apparatus may also be configured to have sufficient space available in memory to store the decoded MPEG video frames. In either configuration, reverse playback may be effectuated with a much finer temporal granularity than what is currently achievable by conventional video recording apparatuses.

  • Patent number: 6961430
Abstract: A method and apparatus for enabling background caching of encrypted programming data on a storage medium for later playback in a digital video recorder (DVR) system. A set-top box (STB) equipped with a DVR searches a program guide for upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) events. When the PPV event begins, the STB tunes an appropriate transponder and begins receiving programming data packets containing audio, video, system time and conditional access data packets associated with the event, which are stored for playback on a storage medium. When the user turns the STB on and selects an option to playback a previously-recorded PPV event, the appropriate programming data is retrieved from the storage medium, and the STB recreates the original transmission timing of the data, to be displayed on a display device of the user.

  • Publication number: 20020146038
Abstract: A method and system including a broadcast and a local information source, a headend, and a link are described for providing local information to a user device. A broadcast information stream generated at a first data rate is received at the headend. Local information packets are inserted at the headend into the broadcast information stream forming a combined information stream which is transmitted to the user device at a different data rate. Alternatively, local information packets are inserted in place of unusable packets in a broadcast information stream to form a combined information stream which is transmitted to the user device. The user device may be, a display, a, computer, a VCR, a DVR, a set-top box, or a TV.

  • Patent number: 6308280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synchronizing downstream circuit boards with the clock values transmitted in the incoming bitstream of a digital broadcast data signal from a digital satellite system (DSS) or digital video broadcast (DVB) is disclosed. The disclosed embodiments use the generation of quasi-periodic interrupts which latch, at the same time for all downstream circuits, local clock times. The differences between successive local clock times are compared in downstream processors to differences between a front-end circuits locked system times to determine local clock adjustment values to synchronize downstream circuits.
