    Abstract: A method for evaluating a cutting arrangement for a drill bit includes selecting a cutting element arrangement for the drill bit and calculating a score for the cutting arrangement. This method may be used to evaluate the cutting efficiency of various drill bit designs. In one example, this method is used to calculate a score for an arrangement based on a comparison of an expected bottomhole pattern for the arrangement with a preferred bottomhole pattern. The use of this method has lead to roller cone drill bit designs that exhibit reduce tracking over prior art bits.

    Abstract: A roller cone drill bit is disclosed which includes a bit body adapted to be coupled to a drill string. A bearing journal depends from the bit body. A single roller cone is rotatably attached to the bearing journal. The roller cone has a plurality of inserts disposed at selected positions about the cone. The journal defines a rotation angle with respect to an axis of rotation of the bit such that the roller cone includes a wall contact zone and a bottom contact zone. At least one of the inserts disposed in the wall contact zone has an extension portion terminating in a substantially planar upper surface.

    Abstract: A cutter element that balances maximum gage-keeping capabilities with minimal tensile stress induced damage to the cutter elements is disclosed. The cutter elements of the present invention have a non-symmetrical shape and may include a more aggressive cutting profile than conventional cutter elements. In one embodiment, a cutter element is configured such that the inside angle at which its leading face intersects the wear face is less than the inside angle at which its trailing face intersects the wear face. This can also be accomplished by providing the cutter element with a relieved wear face. In another embodiment of the invention, the surfaces of the present cutter element are curvilinear and the transitions between the leading and trailing faces and the gage face are rounded, or contoured.

    Abstract: A cutter element having a substantially flat wear face and leading compression and trailing tension zones, wherein the leading compression zone is sharper than the trailing tension zone. Sharpness is defined as either a smaller inside angle at the intersection of a pair of planes or as a smaller radius of curvature. The cutter element of the present invention experiences reduced stress on its trailing portion in the direction of cutting movement and therefore is less subject to extreme impact damage and cyclic fatigue. The present invention can be applied with particular advantage to heel row cutters, but can also be applied to cutters in other rows that primarily ream the borehole wall and cooperatively cut the borehole corner. The present cutter element can be constructed so as to have either a positive or negative rake angle at its leading compression zone, or to have any of a variety of shapes, depending on the characteristics of the formation in which it is to be used.

    Abstract: A steel tooth, particularly suited for use in a rolling cone bit, includes a root region, a cutting tip spaced from the root region and a gage facing surface therebetween. The gage facing surface includes a knee, and is configured such that the cutting tip is maintained at a position off the gage curve. So positioned, the cutting tip is freed from having to perform any substantial cutting duty in the corner on the borehole corner, and instead may be configured and optimized for bottom hole cutting duty. The knee on the gage facing surface is configured and positioned so as to serve primarily to cut the borehole wall. It is preferred that the knee be positioned off gage, but that it be closer to the gage curve than the cutting tip.

    Abstract: A steel tooth bit includes one or more rolling cone cutters having a generally conical surface, a heel surface, and preferably a transition surface therebetween. A row of gage cutter elements are secured to the cone cutter on the transition surface and have cutting surfaces that cut to full gage. A first inner row of off-gage steel teeth is positioned on the conical surface of the cone cutter so that the gage-facing cutting surfaces of the teeth are close to gage, but are preferably off-gage a distance D at a knee that is formed on the gage facing surface. Distance D is strategically selected such that the gage and off-gage cutter elements cooperatively cut the corner of the borehole. The lower most portion of the gage facing surface of these steel teeth are off gage a distance D' which is greater than D so as to bring the cutting tip of the teeth off gage to prevent undesired wear and rounding off of the tip of the cutter element.

    Abstract: A rotary cone rock bit for drilling boreholes in an earthen formation is disclosed. One or more rotary cones are rotatively retained on a journal bearing connected to the rock bit. These rotary cones form a circumferential heel row with extended ultra hard shaped cutters spaced within the heel row. Each of the shaped cutters form a cutting surface that extends above the heel row or is angled with respect to the formation to maintain the cutters in compression while the cutters shear a borehole wall. The shaped cutters serve to maintain the borehole diameter.

    Abstract: A milled teeth rotary cone rock bit consists of chisel crested milled teeth with generously radiused corners at the ends of the crest. A concave depression is formed in the crest between the radiused ends. A layer of hardfacing material formed over each tooth is thicker at the corners and in the concave depressions in the crest to provide a means to inhibit wear of the hardfacing as the bit works in a borehole.
