  • Patent number: 8911485
Abstract: Devices and methods for warming or cooling blood flowing through the vasculature of a human or animal subject so as to alter or control the temperature of all or part of the subject's body. Heat exchangers are positioned within the subject's vasculature and heated or cooled heat exchange fluid is circulated through the heat exchanger. For certain therapeutic applications, the heat exchanger and associated elements of the system have sufficient power to lower the subject's body temperature by at least 3 degrees C. in less than 30 minutes.

  • Patent number: 8792317
Abstract: A system and method for providing direct read after write functionality in an optical data storage device include an optical head having a first coherent light source modulated at higher power during writing of data to the optical medium and a second coherent light source operating in a continuous wave mode at lower power while the first coherent light source is writing data. Optic components combine light from the first and second light sources and focus light from the first coherent light source to a first spot of a selected track on the optical medium and focus light from the second coherent light source to a second spot on the selected track downstream from the first spot relative to movement direction of the optical medium to read and verify the data directly after writing during the write process rather than in a separate verification process.

  • Patent number: 8760786
Abstract: A tape edge sensor system for detecting lateral movement of a storage tape includes a first photo-emitter, a first photo-detector positioned to receive a first light signal from the first photo-emitter, a first aperture disposed between the first photo-emitter and the first photo-detector, and a feedback system connected to the first photo-emitter and the first photo-detector. The first aperture defines a first region at a first tape edge through which the first light signal is received by the first photo-detector with the storage tape blocking a portion of the first light signal. The feedback system determines the first photo-detector's signal amplitude and adjusts the first light signal such that the first photo-detector signal amplitude is within a first average amplitude range. A tape edge sensor system using compensating photo-interrupters is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20140140184
Abstract: An optical tape pick up unit includes a holographic optical element and an aspheric objective lens. The holographic optical element splits a laser beam into first order beams and introduces pre-compensating wavefront error into the first order beams. The aspheric objective lens focuses the first order beams onto optical tape and introduces wavefront error into the first order beams having a magnitude similar to and polarity opposite that of the pre-compensating wavefront error.

  • Patent number: 8510766
Abstract: Various embodiments herein include utilities that facilitate the substantially flat and aligned mounting of optical tape segments on testing drums to increase testing accuracy of the tape segments. In this regard, a drum for testing optical tape media is disclosed having a substantially planar portion onto which first and second ends of an optical tape segment may be mounted to thereby secure the entire tape segment around an outer testing surface of the drum. Also disclosed is fixture that may be used to precisely mount and secure the tape segment over the outer mounting surface of a drum in a manner that reduces axial run-out and wrinkling of the optical tape.

Abstract: A clot retrieval device including a self-expandable member having a proximal end portion and a main body portion. The self-expandable member is expandable from a first delivery position to a second placement position. In the first delivery position the expandable member has a first overall diameter In one implementation the cell structures that form the self-expandable member have dimensional and material characteristics that result in about a ?1.0N to about a ?1.7N overall reduction in radial force along the length of the expandable member per millimeter of expansion during about an initial 0.50 mm diametric range of expansion from the first overall diameter and that results in about a ?0.10N to about a ?0.35N overall reduction in radial force along the length of the expandable member per millimeter of expansion during subsequent diametric ranges of expansion.
