Abstract: A handgun safe including a tray to receive a handgun and a lid operatively associated with the tray such that the tray may slide horizontally with respect to the lid to selectively reveal or conceal the interior portion of the tray. In all embodiments the height of the lid is less than the height of the tray. The handgun safe may further include a latch associated with the lid and tray configured to secure or lock the tray in a closed position with respect to the lid. The handgun safe may further include an electronic switch configured to cause the latch to disengage. The electronic switch may include a biometric scanner, electronic lock or other security device.
