    Abstract: A method is provided for cleaning an exterior surface that is stained as a result of biological growth of an organism, such as algae, lichen, or moss. The method includes applying a cleaning composition having an effective amount of alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium-chloride to the exterior surface. A method is also provided for preventing biodeterioration of an exterior surface. The method includes applying a cleaning composition having alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium-chloride to the exterior surface. An exterior surface cleaning formulation has an effective amount of alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium-chloride.
