  • Patent number: 8015648
Abstract: The system includes a plurality of joining assemblies (37, 38, 39) for removably attaching a driven member assembly (15) of the appliance to an appliance body portion (12), wherein the joining assemblies are separate from the torsional axis of the workpiece. The joining assemblies each include an extending pin member (43) on the appliance body and a receiving element (46) in the driven member assembly for receiving the extending pin member. A drive shaft (16) for the workpiece is connected to a head portion (24) of the driven member assembly by two springs (32, 34), wherein the extending pin member mates with the receiving element in such a manner that there is no lost motion of the workpiece during operation but also such that the driven member assembly is readily removable from the appliance body.

  • Publication number: 20100072684
Abstract: A nodal-mounted spring arrangement for an electronic toothbrush includes a V-shaped spring member secured at both ends so that it can operate in out-of-phase torsion mode along the axial dimension thereof. A mounting plate is connected between a node point along the V-shaped spring member and the housing of the toothbrush. In one embodiment, the V-shaped spring member includes opposing slots on opposite sides of the node point, the slots extending in an axial direction, creating an integrated torsion bar node spring, while reducing stress in the vicinity of the nodal point.

  • Publication number: 20090241276
Abstract: The system changes frequency of the toothbrush to adjust the amplitude of motion of the brush portion of the toothbrush. The change in frequency occurs either manually or automatically. In the manual embodiment, the user, via a switch and internal circuitry, can adjust the operating frequency of the toothbrush which results in a change of amplitude to a value which is most comfortable to the user. In the automatic mode, the resonant frequency of the toothbrush is determined upon initiation of the operation of the toothbrush. The resonant frequency value is then offset by a selected amount, usually higher than the resonant frequency; this offset frequency is the operating frequency of the toothbrush.

  • Publication number: 20090064429
Abstract: An oral care appliance, includes a handle portion and attachable to the handle portion. toothbrush is positioned within such as a power toothbrush a head portion which is A driving assembly for the handle portion. The handle portion includes an exterior transparent protective housing which satisfies conventional environmental and consumer tests and requirements, and an interior sleeve member adapted to receive the driving assembly and which fits within the transparent housing and is visible therethrough. The interior sleeve member is clearly differentiated from other sleeve members by means of a visual component, such as color or surface texture, thus providing a ready differentiation between otherwise similar or the same toothbrushes.

  • Publication number: 20080028548
Abstract: The brushhead includes a brushhead member which includes a bristle field, the brushhead member being adapted for cleaning teeth as part of a power toothbrush, wherein the brushhead in operation moves in a reciprocating action. In one embodiment the brushhead includes a rim member which extends around at least a substantial portion of the brushhead, the rim member extending around the entire bristle field and having an upper edge which is lower than the top of the bristles. The rim member has a different flexibility than the bristles so that the movement of the rim member and the bristles is out of phase during operation of the toothbrush, which results in fluid from the bristles being directed toward the teeth during operation of the toothbrush.

  • Patent number: 7067945
Abstract: The apparatus for converting side-to-side to rotational motion for a workpiece includes a spring assembly with a movable base mounting element which is driven in a slightly arcuate reciprocal side-to-side motion and a fixed mounting element spaced apart from the base element and mounted in the appliance so that it does not rotate or move in operation of the apparatus. A spring member, such as two planar leaf springs positioned at an angle to each other, is mounted between the movable base element and the fixed mounting element. A drive shaft member extends from the movable base element through the fixed mounting element and beyond. A workpiece such as a brushhead is mounted on the distal end of the drive shaft. The spring member is configured so that it is substantially less resistant to twisting action than bending action, such that the side-to-side motion of the base element results in rotation of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6997446
Abstract: The rotational spring includes a base member which is in the form of a ring and includes elements for fixedly attaching it to a body of an appliance, such as a power toothbrush, which includes a drive element such as a drive shaft portion of a motor. Also included is an upper member in the form of a disc having a central opening through which the drive shaft is fitted, such that the disc member rotates with rotation of the drive shaft. Three leg members extend between the upper disc member and the base ring member. The spring is made from a material and is so configured and arranged that it has a symmetric spring rate for clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation.

  • Patent number: 6808331
Abstract: The fluid delivery/refilling system includes a unit-of-use fluid reservoir for dentifrice or medication within a head portion of a power toothbrush, which is removable from the remainder thereof. A pump element is located in the brushhead and is configured so that the back and forth movement of the brushhead in operation results in fluid moving from the reservoir to a dispensing valve located in the brushhead. The dispensing valve has an end portion which is normally closed, opening under pressure of fluid from the pump. The refilling assembly is separate from the toothbrush and is configured to fit over the top of the toothbrush. Upward pressure exerted on the toothbrush when the toothbrush is within the refilling assembly results in movement of a core element in the refilling assembly, which in turn results in a hollow needle in the refilling assembly extending into a refiller valve in the head portion of the toothbrush.
