Patent number: 9863004Abstract: Methods, kits, and compositions for evaluating the quality of nucleic acids within a biological sample for analysis in a molecular assay are provided. A kit is provided for evaluating a biological sample containing potentially degraded DNA, comprising a control reagent and a target amplification reagent, wherein the control amplification reagent comprises one or more pairs of amplification oligonucleotides capable of amplifying a medium chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (MCAD) nucleic acid molecule or a complement thereof, and wherein the target amplification reagent comprises one or more pairs of amplification oligonucleotides capable of amplifying a non-MCAD target gene of interest or a complement thereof. Frequently, one or more of the amplification oligonucleotides is/are labeled.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2012Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: GEN-PROBE INCORPORATEDInventors: Scott Higgins, Mike Webb

Patent number: 9836926Abstract: A controller doorbell circuit includes a first terminal of a button wired to a first terminal of a transformer, a second terminal of the transformer wired to an input transformer terminal of a controller wired to a battery power source and coupled in signal communication to a mobile device, a transformer terminal of a signaling device wired to an output transformer terminal of the controller, and a second terminal of the button and an alarm terminal of the signaling device wired to an alarm terminal of the controller. The controller opens disabling the controller doorbell circuit disabling the signaling device from sounding an alarm when the button is pressed, in response to a first signal from the mobile device. The controller closes enabling the controller doorbell circuit enabling the signaling device to sound the alarm when the button is pressed, in response to a second signal from the mobile device.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2016Date of Patent: December 5, 2017Inventor: Scott Higgins

Publication number: 20160078468Abstract: Some embodiments are associated with receiving, from a remote potential member device, an electronic message comprising a request for military service verification. In addition, the request may be associated with: an indication of an affirmative attestation that the potential member, or a relative of the potential member, has served or is currently serving in the military, supplemental service information, an electronic image of the potential member's face, a name, and associated payment information (e.g., a credit card number). A validation process may then be automatically performed and a unique identifier may be assigned to the potential member. It may also be arranged for an identification card, including the name, the image of the potential member's face, and the unique identifier, to be provided to the potential member, and the potential member may now be designated as a verified member.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2015Publication date: March 17, 2016Inventors: Linda P. Higgins, H. Scott Higgins

Patent number: 9151738Abstract: Solvent extraction to quantify contamination of a sample by a hydrocarbon contaminant is performed by providing a defined quantity of the sample, providing a defined quantity of a siloxane solvent, mixing the defined quantity of the siloxane solvent and the defined quantity of the sample to extract the hydrocarbon contaminant from the sample to form a contaminant solution with the siloxane solvent, and separating the contaminant solution from the sample. A concentration of the hydrocarbon contaminant in the contaminant solution can be measured by vibrational spectroscopy. Siloxane solvents are CFC free, VOC exempt, odorless, colorless, low to moderately flammable, non-toxic, and safe for incidental skin contact. Some are even used in cosmetic products.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2013Date of Patent: October 6, 2015Assignee: Agilent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Franklin Scott Higgins, John Arthur Seelenbinder
