Patent number: 9869232Abstract: A cooling system for an internal combustion engine in a vehicle comprises a variable-speed coolant pump for providing a coolant flow to a plurality of heat-transfer nodes coupled in a coolant loop with the pump. Each node generates a flow rate request based on an operating state of the node. The coolant loop is configurable to a plurality of restriction states. A pump controller receives the flow rate requests, maps each respective flow request to a pump flow rate that would produce the respective pump flow rate request, selects a largest mapped pump flow rate, identifies a restriction state in which the coolant loop is configured, selects a pump speed in response to the selected flow rate and the identified restriction state, and commands operation of the pump to produce the selected pump speed.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2012Date of Patent: January 16, 2018Assignee: FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLCInventors: Osama A. Abihana, Scott M. Robichaud, Scott J. Thompson

Patent number: 8229633Abstract: An engine is selectively operative in one of a plurality of engine states to transfer torque to an input member of a hybrid transmission. The hybrid transmission is operative to transfer torque between the input member and a torque machine and an output member to generate an output torque in response to an operator torque request. A method for controlling the engine includes monitoring the operator torque request, determining operating power costs associated with a plurality of candidate engine states in response to the operator torque request, determining transition costs for transitioning the engine from a present engine state to each of the candidate engine states, determining stabilization costs for operating the engine in the present engine state and subsequently operating the engine in each of the candidate engine states, and selecting a preferred engine state based upon the operating power costs, the transition costs, and the stabilization costs for the plurality of engine states.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2008Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignees: GM Global Technology Operations LLC, Daimler AG, Chrysler Group LLC, Bayerische Motoren Werke AktiengesellschaftInventors: Anthony H. Heap, Wilfried Brunssen, Scott J Thompson

Patent number: 8150595Abstract: A control method for a hybrid powerplant includes receiving a pre-transition signal, and selectively adjusting a combustion torque of an engine of the powerplant between a first torque value and a second torque value prior to a deactivation transition period based on the pre-transition signal, wherein the second torque value is less than the first torque value. The method further includes selectively adjusting an electric drive torque of an electric machine of the powerplant prior to the deactivation transition period based on the pre-transition signal and the combustion torque. The selectively adjusting the electric drive torque includes adjusting the electric drive torque such that a sum of the combustion torque and the electric drive torque is equal to a desired drive torque of the powerplant during a pre-transition period prior to the deactivation transition period. A related control system is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2009Date of Patent: April 3, 2012Inventors: Scott J Thompson, Michael J. Pitsch, Goro Tamai
