  • Patent number: 9169929
Abstract: A seal apparatus includes: (a) first and second machine elements defining a sealing interface between two zones subject to different fluid pressures, a boundary of which lies between the two elements; (b) a seal comprising rigid material carried by the first machine element and having an annular lip defining a first contact surface; (c) a second contact surface comprising rigid material, defined by the second machine element; (c) wherein both contact surfaces are wear resistant, and the first and second contact surfaces bear directly against each other, so as to seal against fluid leakage between the first and second zones, while allowing relative sliding motion between the first and second contact surfaces; and (d) wherein the seal is configured to allow the lip to deform elastically and permit the first contact surface to conform in a regular or irregular shape to the second contact surface.

  • Patent number: 9107754
Abstract: A prosthetic joint member includes: a generally concave cup with an outer surface that is bone-implantable, the cup including a first indexing feature; a concave insert disposed inside the cup, the insert comprising a rigid material and including a concave interior defining a nominal surface, the interior including a cantilevered flange defined by an undercut in the insert, the flange defining a wear-resistant first contact surface which protrudes inward relative to the nominal surface, the insert including a second indexing feature. The first and second indexing features engage each other so as to retain the insert in a fixed angular orientation relative to the cup.

  • Patent number: 8794840
Abstract: A bearing apparatus includes: (a) an inner member comprising rigid material with a first contact surface; (b) an outer member comprising rigid material with a second contact surface; (c) an annular intermediate member between the inner and outer members, and having: (i) a third contact surface including first bearing elements contacting the first contact surface to define a first bearing interface, each first bearing element including a raised central portion flanked beam portions; and (ii) a fourth contact surface including second bearing elements contacting the second contact surface to define a second bearing interface, each second bearing element including a raised central portion flanked by a pair of beam portions; (d) wherein the contact surfaces of each bearing interface are wear-resistant; and (e) wherein the bearing elements are shaped and sized so as to conform in an irregular shape to the at least one contact surface.

  • Publication number: 20140081406
Abstract: A prosthetic joint includes: (a) a first member including a bone-implantable surface, comprising rigid material, and including a body having a cantilevered perimeter flange that defines a wear-resistant, concave first contact surface having a protruding rim and a recessed central portion; (b) a second member including a bone-implantable surface and comprising rigid material with a wear-resistant, convex second contact surface; (c) where the contact surfaces bear directly against each other, transferring axial and lateral loads between the members, while allowing pivoting motion therebetween; (d) wherein the flange is shaped and sized so as to deform elastically, permitting the first contact surface to conform in an irregular shape to the second contact surface when the joint is loaded; and (e) wherein at least one of the bone-implantable surfaces includes at least one mechanical feature configured to maintain the associated member in a specific position and/or orientation relative to bone.
