  • Patent number: 6219093
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating an electro-optical array. Images indicative of shapes are obtained in some way, and these images are processed. The processed image is then used to drive an electro-optical array, such as a liquid crystal display, such that some parts of the display are opaque and other parts are transparent. A light source is directed through the liquid crystal array and thereby generates a light signal having the same shape as those parts of the liquid crystal array which are transparent.

  • Patent number: 5831130
Abstract: A condensed phase process for the preparation of purified 2,3-pentanedione from lactic acid and an alkali metal lactate is described. The process uses elevated temperatures between about 200.degree. to 360.degree. C. for heating a reaction mixture of lactic acid and an alkali metal lactate to produce the 2,3-pentanedione in a reaction vessel. The 2,3-pentanedione produced is vaporized from the reaction vessel and condensed with water.

  • Patent number: 5733237
Abstract: A paper holding tray having a generally flat top surface, and a generally flat folding guide included on the top surface of the tray. The paper holding tray generally includes front and back edges, first and second sides, and first and second truncated corners adjacent the front edge. Preferably, a pair of parallel ridges extend between the front and back edges of the tray and the folding guide fits in between. Rear wall members are included on the top surface of the tray adjacent to the back edge. First and second side wall members are included on the top surface adjacent the first and second sides respectively. The rear wall members and side wall members form a generally contiguous lip about the sides and back edges of the tray and define a paper receiving recess on the top surface of the tray. A slot between the rear wall members accommodates one end of the folding guide, the other end of which extends out over the front edge of the tray.

  • Patent number: 5608917
Abstract: An ergonomic head band which may be comfortably worn for extended periods of time. The head band includes a strap having first and second upwardly curved side arcuate segments, a front arcuate region, and tails which couple together at the back of a wearer's head. Platform regions are provided between the front arcuate region and side arcuate segments. The side arcuate segments comfortably accommodate the ears of a wearer while the head band is worn, while the front arcuate region is positioned adjacent the wearer's head. The platform regions allow face shields or other apparatus to be coupled to the head band.

  • Patent number: 5601108
Abstract: A gas line safety evacuation apparatus and method wherein earthquakes or other hazardous disruptive events are monitored and detected. Upon detection of an earthquake or like event, gas or other fluid lines are evacuated by an evacuation pump, and the evacuated gas is stored in a storage tank for future use. Control valves are activated upon detection of the earthquake to prevent additional gas or fluid from entering the lines.

  • Patent number: 5588836
Abstract: A mouth prop and tongue retractor apparatus for use in dental procedures. The apparatus includes a handle rotatably mounted within a base. A ball joint on the base fits within a socket in a mouth prop to provide pivotal positional adjustment of the apparatus. An elongated aspirator tube extends through the handle and base, and is coupled to a tongue retractor. A suction aperture on the tongue retractor communicates with the aspirator tube and provides for saliva removal from a patient's mouth. Rotation of the handle provides extension adjustment for the aspirator tube and tongue retractor.

  • Patent number: 5577602
Abstract: A switch extender for electrical switches having a front plate slidably coupled to a back plate which in turn is attached to a wall-mounted switch plate. The back plate includes a knock-out portion which allows use of the invention with both toggle switches and rocker switches. A pair of cylindrical bars are positioned within an opening in the front plate. A toggle switch fits within a slot between the bars, and the corners of a rocker switch fit within slots outside of the bars on the front plate. Sliding the front plate relative to the back plate actuates the switch.
