  • Publication number: 20020166958
Abstract: The methods of the invention exploit the mass-to-charge ratio dependent motion of ions in an electrodynamic ion traps in synergy with a charge quenching process. In an electrodynamic ion trap, each mass-to-charge ratio is characterized by a unique set of frequencies of motion. Accordingly, by tailoring the time-varying electrical potential of the ion trap the invention controls which ions are allowed or retained in the ion trap and which ions are subjected to charge quenching reactions. Control of ion retention and charge quenching is used to improve sample throughput, dynamic mass range and signal discrimination in the mass spectrometry of multiply charged ions.

  • Patent number: 6452168
Abstract: A continuous beam Fourier transform mass spectrometer in which a sample of ions to be analyzed is trapped in a trapping field, and the ions in the range of the mass-to-charge ratios to be analyzed are excited at their characteristic frequencies of motion by a continuous excitation signal. The excited ions in resonant motions generate real or image currents continuously which can be detected and processed to provide a mass spectrum.

  • Patent number: 5206509
Abstract: A universal collisional activation ion trap comprises an ion trapping means containing a bath gas and having connected thereto a noise signal generator. A method of operating a universal collisional activation ion trap comprises the steps of: providing an ion trapping means; introducing into the ion trapping means a bath gas; and, generating a noise signal within the ion trapping means; introducing into the ion trapping means a substance that, when acted upon by the noise signal, undergoes collisional activation to form product ions.

  • Patent number: 4849628
Abstract: An atmospheric sampling glow discharge ionization source that can be used in combination with an analytical instrument which operates at high vacuum, such as a mass spectrometer. The atmospheric sampling glow discharge ionization source comprises a chamber with at least one pair of electrodes disposed therein, an inlet for a gaseous sample to be analyzed and an outlet communicating with an analyzer which operates at subatmospheric pressure. The ionization chamber is maintained at a pressure below atmospheric pressure, and a voltage difference is applied across the electrodes to induce a glow discharge between the electrodes, so that molecules passing through the inlet are ionized by the glow discharge and directed into the analyzer. The ionization source accepts the sample under atmospheric pressure conditions and processes it directly into the high vacuum instrument, bridging the pressure gap and drawing off unwanted atmospheric gases.
