Patent number: 10066537Abstract: An exhaust connection coupler and a method for manufacturing a braid cover incorporated therein are provided. The method of manufacturing comprises the steps of providing a tubular sleeve formed of braided wire filaments and forming at least one end of the sleeve into shape using a forming die such that the at least one end of the cover includes a circumferential neck portion having a diameter smaller than the diameter of a body portion of the cover. In the method, the sleeve may be pressed between male and female forming dies in order to create the cover's desired shape, which can include a shoulder extending radially outwardly from the cover's neck portion and meeting the cover's body portion at a corner.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2015Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: TRU-FLEX, LLCInventors: Robert F. Stalcup, II, Scott R. Swank

Publication number: 20130015652Abstract: An exhaust connection coupler is provided having a flexible conduit portion, a cover made of a generally porous and flexible knitted metallic wire mesh material surrounding the conduit portion and a retainer for combining end parts of the conduit portion and cover. The cover may be constructed of a series of stockinette stitches formed in a continuous round-and-round manner in a seamless tubular configuration. The cover can be selected from a group of covers designed to be applied to the coupler, the particular cover being chosen for its weight or stiffness so as to selectively control the natural frequency of the coupler. Additionally, the loosely knitted configuration of the cover is designed to provide resistance limiting longitudinal growth of the coupler while enabling compression and angular flexibility. Further, the coupler may include one or more spacers for providing separation between the cover and the conduit portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2011Publication date: January 17, 2013Inventors: Clark Thomas, Scott R. Swank

Publication number: 20120279606Abstract: An internally insulated rigid exhaust system conduit and method for making the same are provided. The conduit includes an outer rigid tube, a generally flexible inner portion positioned within the outer tube and an insulation layer positioned therebetween. The conduit may include one or more bends or curves. Due to the flexibility of the inner portion and insulation, a gap defined between the inner portion and outer tube may be generally uniform in width even after the bending of the outer tube. During the manufacturing process, the inner portion is wrapped with a blanket or sleeve of insulation material to form a wrapped subassembly and then inserted into the outer tube. The insertion of the wrapped subassembly may occur either before or after a bending of the outer tube. The insulation may also be blown into the gap defined between the inner portion and outer tube.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 2, 2012Publication date: November 8, 2012Inventors: Michael G. Teso, JR., Scott R. Swank, Matthew C. Harmon, Robert F. Stalcup, Clark W. Thomas, Lucky D. Jordan

Patent number: 7775561Abstract: A connection assembly for pipes is provided. The assembly includes a pipe, a corrugated conduit, a circumferentially contractible seal positioned between portions of the conduit and the pipe, a clamp encircling the conduit, seal and pipe, and a plurality of discrete projections on the inside of the seal to limit the extent of overlap between the pipe and the conduit. The seal is circumferentially contractible to secure the conduit and the pipe together with the seal serving to effect a gas-tight seal while filling the annular gap between the conduit and pipe.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2006Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: Tru-Flex Metal Hose Corp.Inventor: Scott R.
