Patent number: 6701165Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for beam selection in a non-stationary subscriber radio unit having a multi-beam antenna array. The disclosed multi-beam antenna array acts in an omni-directional manner whenever signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance is sufficient, and excludes individual branches, as necessary, on the basis of SNR performance. A multi-mode approach is used to select appropriate antennas in the multi-beam antenna array. A given mode is established on the basis of the SNR of the received signal. Generally, if the SNR of the received signal satisfies predefined criteria, the non-stationary subscriber radio unit will operate the multi-beam antenna array in an omni-directional-like manner, by equally combining the received signal from each individual narrow-beam antenna branch.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2000Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Agere Systems Inc.Inventors: Ming-Ju Ho, Michael Scott Rawles, Raymond R. Patent number: 6556190Abstract: A stylus for use in a coordinate input system (e.g. digitizer tablet system) includes a finger wheel. The degree of rotation of the finger wheel by the user determines the extent to which a chosen graphical parameter (e.g. line thickness, color, shading, gray scale, etc.) is varied. Thus, a user can easily vary the graphical parameter while drawing by merely rotating the finger wheel about its fixed rotational axis. Preferably, rotation of the wheel causes an intermediate gear wheel with teeth thereon to rotate which in turn causes a potentiometer to detect the degree of rotation of the finger wheel. In alternative embodiments of this invention, a touchpad for inputting finger position and/or finger pressure information may be provided on the side of the stylus instead of the finger wheel.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2001Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: Wacom Co., Ltd.Inventors: David C. Fleck, Scott Rawlings, Yasuyuki Fukushima

Patent number: 6512513Abstract: A digitizer pointer for use in conjunction with a digitizer system. The pointer is shaped so as to reduce finger/hand fatigue of users manipulating the pointer over and/or across a digitizer tablet. In certain embodiments, an enlarged grip area may flare toward the bottom which helps to prevent the pointer from sliding out of the user's hand. In certain other embodiments, a textured grip area is provided to improve the user's ability to hold onto and control the pointer. In yet further embodiments, a flare is provided near the tip of the pointer in order to reduce the force required by fingers of the user to manipulate and hold the pointer.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1998Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Assignee: Wacom Co., Ltd.Inventors: David C. Fleck, Scott Rawlings, Konrad W. Pollmann, Jan Hippen, Folke Schlueter, Yasuyuki Fukushima, Masuo Hirota

Patent number: 6154196Abstract: A coordinate input device (e.g. mouse-like device or cursor-like device) includes an outer housing which is movable between a first position adapted for use by right-handed users, and a second position adapted for use by left-handed users. In such a manner, the coordinate input device is easily utilized by both right and left-handed users. In certain embodiments, a rotatable thumb or finger wheel may be provided in the coordinate input device for manipulation by the user in order to adjust a parameter of an image being written/drawn on a corresponding display screen by the coordinate input device.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1998Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignee: Wacom Co., Ltd.Inventors: David C.
