  • Patent number: 5694650
Abstract: A face shield assembly for a snowmobile or motorcycle helmet has a ventilation system for cold-weather face shield defogging. The face shield has a face shield frame, lower and upper face shield frame vents, and lower and upper air guides to direct the flow of air flowing through the lower and upper vents. The face shield may be a heated double lens shield having a weather lens, a face lens and an air gap in between the weather lens and the face lens. The assembly may also include an electric face shield defogging system having first and second electrodes extending along the upper and lower edge portions, respectively, of the air gap-facing surface of the face lens. Side areas of the face shield are substantially free of visual obstruction so as to enhance the rider's field of vision. There is a separate electric connector at an end of each electrode, with each connector extending through at least one lens and coming into direct contact with its respective electrode.

  • Patent number: 5394566
Abstract: A replacement sports helmet face shield assembly has a cold-weather ventilation system for face shield defogging without circulating cold air through the interior of the sports helmet. The assembly has a face shield frame that carries a face shield. The frame has a lower face shield frame vent and an upper face shield frame vent. The upper portion of the frame may have an air flow director which, when the assembly is mounted on a sports helmet, directs air entering the upper frame vent. The directed air flow creates a vacuum that draws air entering the lower frame vent substantially upward along an interior surface of said face shield. A sports helmet assembly has a versatile, adjustable ventilation system which can operate in a defog-only mode in cold weather, a defog and interior ventilation mode in warmer weather, and an interior ventilation-only mode when no defogging is desired.

  • Patent number: 5333329
Abstract: A ratchet system for a motorcycle or bicycle helmet shield has a one-piece face shield with end tabs having a ring of upraised teeth and additional radially extending teeth along a curved edge. The ratchet system also has a pair of helmet-mounted side plates, each having a leaf spring with a central point that engages in grooves between the radially extending teeth of the end tabs. The end tabs are pivotally mounted on the side plates. The ratchet system also has shield covers having a set of surface teeth to engage with grooves between the upraised teeth of the end tabs. The ratchet system may also include bolts for attaching the system to the helmet, for holding the covers against the end tabs, and for adjusting the ratcheting tension. A bicycle or motorcycle helmet face shield for protecting a bicycle or motorcycle rider's face from the sun includes a transparent body, an ultraviolet ray-filtering coating on a surface of the body, and a reflective coating on the same surface of the body.
