    Abstract: A furfuryl alcohol-based foundry binder for use in the manufacture of large foundry sand shapes is disclosed. It is intended as a replacement for conventional alkyd oil foundry binders, and comprises a monomeric mixture of furfuryl alcohol, other alcohols, glycols, or polyols, and high boiling mixtures of ester-substituted diphenyl and polyphenyl aromatic compounds, and a strong acid catalyst. In addition, the binder may include, for example, urea-formaldehyde syrup.
