  • Patent number: 9534577
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for use in power generation, including a fluid-flow-driven power generator for use in a fluid-containing pipe such as a drill pipe as used in oil and gas exploration and extraction. Parts of the generator are removable from the pipe—for example while a drill pipe is downhole within a drilling well—to leave a clear through bore for survey and fishing operations and to enable replacement of the removed parts. The flow-driven generator comprises an impeller connected to a magnet assembly to rotate the magnet assembly when fluid flows past the impeller. This causes relative movement between the magnet assembly and an adjacent electrical coil assembly, the relative movement and magnetic coupling generating an electrical current in the coil assembly. This generated electrical current is used to power electrical devices within the pipe.

  • Patent number: 9494198
Abstract: A constant velocity (CV) joint includes a conical shield to protect a J-boot from damage due to projectiles such as stones. In order to facilitate vehicle assembly, the conical shield is divided into a number of leaves which each flex radially to permit installation of bolts. When the CV joint is shipped to the vehicle assembly plant, a band is installed to hold the leaves in a stowed position. Once the bolts have been installed to attach the CV joint to a driveline component, the band is removed and the leaves flex to a deployed position in which they protect the J-boot.

  • Patent number: 9488231
Abstract: A cooling apparatus and method for providing a cooling air flow in a region of a constant velocity joint. The constant velocity joint has a housing comprising a first housing portion and a second housing portion. The first and second housing portions are coupled together by fasteners. The cooling device comprises a load-distributing portion and a fan-blade portion. The load-distributing portion is located between a head of each fastener and either the first or second housing portion, with each fastener inserted into a respective hole in the load-distributing portion. The load-distributing portion distributes a load applied by the fasteners to the first or second housing portion. The fan-blade portion is coupled to the load-distributing portion. The fan-blade portion is configured to create a current of air when the constant velocity joint housing rotates.

  • Publication number: 20160319877
Abstract: A drivetrain assembly includes a transmission and a driveshaft that are joined together by a transmission flange and a driveshaft flange that has a plurality of pre-assembled bolts. The driveshaft flange defines a plurality of holes and countersink recesses and the bolts are secured to the driveshaft flange by a bolt retainer disposed in each of the countersink recesses between the transmission flange and the driveshaft flange. A method is disclosed for assembling a transmission flange and a driveshaft flange that defines a plurality of holes and countersink recesses. A bolt is assembled into each of the holes and countersink recesses and a bolt retainer is attached to each of the bolts and nested inside the countersink recesses to retain the bolts on the driveshaft flange. The bolts on the driveshaft flange are then installed into the threaded holes of the transmission flange.

  • Publication number: 20160312837
Abstract: A constant velocity joint includes a body, a cup, an annular array of bolts, and an annular gasket. The body has a first planar surface. The cup has a second planar surface positioned adjacent the first planar surface. The annular array of bolts interconnects the cup and body. The annular gasket is interposed between the planar surfaces of the cup and the body. The gasket has a plurality of notches defined on an outer perimeter of the gasket sized to receive the array of bolts. The notches are spaced adjacent to a corresponding bolt and define an open space between the planar surfaces around a bolt periphery. The open space enables thread-locking fluid to escape without causing displacement of the gasket or separation of the planar surfaces. A method of transmitting torque through a CV joint is also contemplated.

Abstract: A system and method for generating an interactive routing diagram for an endless belt is disclosed. The routing diagram illustrates a plurality of components associated with an accessory drive system. The system includes a display, a routing database, and a processor. The routing database stores a routing table associated with the routing diagram. The routing table stores routing information indicating a location of at least one hyperlinked character displayed on the routing diagram. The hyperlinked character is associated with a specific component of the accessory drive system. The processor is in communication with the display and the routing database. The processor executes an instruction for generating an image of the routing diagram on the display. The processor also executes an instruction for generating an image of the hyperlinked character upon the routing diagram, where the hyperlinked character is linked to data associated with the specific component.
