Patent number: 10144386Abstract: A belly pan is provided for a motor vehicle. The belly pan includes a body having at least one stiffener with a forwardmost zone of peak section force F1, an intermediate zone of peak section force F2 and a rearwardmost zone of peak section force F3 where F1<F2<F3. Advantageously, the belly pan functions to provide pedestrian protection while simultaneously limiting vehicle damage resulting from a low-speed collision.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2015Date of Patent: December 4, 2018Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Matthew B. Makowski, Aileen M. DeVoe, Se Kyoon Shin, Laike Misikir, Luis Rafael Reyes Flores, Djamal Eddine Midoun

Publication number: 20160251033Abstract: A hood assembly for a vehicle includes an outer panel and an inner panel. The inner panel includes a plurality of slots or apertures defined in a portion of an edge thereof, disposed to cause a controlled deformation of a left side edge and a right side edge of the hood assembly on receiving a frontal impact. Optionally, at least one lateral crest line may be defined across a width of the inner panel. A hood hinge assembly fixedly attaches the hood assembly to a frame member of the vehicle. In combination, the slots or apertures, optional crest line, and fixed hood hinge assembly reduce rearward displacement of the hood assembly on receiving a frontal impact, thereby reducing damage to vehicle components such as the a-pillar, body side panels, and fenders.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 27, 2015Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventors: Theodore Victor Kolar, JR., Sushil Shastry, Matthew B. Makowski, Aileen M. DeVoe, Se Kyoon Shin, Shawn Michael Morgans

Patent number: 9308842Abstract: A seat assembly including a seat pan that drops vertically in the event of a frontal impact event to help safeguard against the head of an unbelted seat occupant striking the headliner, windshield or other components of the vehicle. The seat assembly includes a seat pan attached to a seat track. The seat track further includes an attachment bracket. A swing linkage movably connects the seat pan with the seat track by a movable fastener. A slot is formed in the bracket through which at least a part of the movable fastener passes. A pyrotechnic fastener also attaches the swing linkage to the bracket. In a frontal impact event, the pyrotechnic fastener is caused to explode thus separating the pyrotechnic fastener into two parts and allowing the swing linkage and its attached seat pan to drop vertically relative to the seat track and lowering the unbelted occupant.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2014Date of Patent: April 12, 2016Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Tzu-Chen Weng, Erika Kristin Low, Djamal Eddine Midoun, Se Kyoon Shin

Patent number: 8824151Abstract: A mounting system for a control module in a vehicle comprises a housing with a flange formed with an opening adapted to receive a fastener for securing the housing to the vehicle. A crack initiator causes a crack to occur in the flange or the housing and thus reduces bending of the housing during a side impact collision causing lateral forces. Preferably, an attachment bolt extends through the opening into the vehicle and the flange forms a C-shape around the opening to allow lateral forces during the side impact collision to force the attachment bolt to slide out of the opening. Preferably, electronic components in the module include an event data recorder for recording data about the vehicle collision and relaying the data after the collision, a communications system for calling for assistance and a controller for cutting off the vehicle fuel supply.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2012Date of Patent: September 2, 2014Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Mahmoud Yousef Ghannam, Todd N Clark, Roy Joseph Scott, Erich Kemnitz, Bhimaraddi Venkaraddi Alavandi, Se Kyoon Shin

Patent number: 8167360Abstract: A vehicle cross member assembly is provided which includes first and second cross members each having first and second ends, and first and second connectors connects to the first ends of the cross member to vehicle structures. The assembly includes a bracket connected to a tunnel structure on a vehicle. The bracket includes first and second brackets for connecting the second ends of the first and second cross members. At least one of the first and second cross members is configured to move laterally inward and downward into the tunnel during a sufficient lateral impact of the vehicle. Additionally, one or more seats may be mounted to the cross members such that the seats move inward and rotate away from the point of impingement during a side impact event.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2010Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Zhibing Deng, Se Kyoon Shin, Shekar Prabhakar Erasala, Bhimaraddi Venkaraddi Alavandi, John Joseph Nizienski
