    Abstract: A common channel signaling system is disclosed that communicates Signaling System Number 7 (SS7) signaling information between two SS7 Signaling Points (SPs) through a packet-switched network. The preferred embodiment of the system includes at least two SS7 SPs and two Signaling Gateways (SGs). Each SG communicates SS7 signaling information with a separate one of the two SS7 SPs through a dedicated circuit. The two SGs intercommunicate with each other through a packet switched network. Additionally, the two SS7 SPs communicate the SS7 signaling information between each other through the two dedicated circuits, the two SGs, and the packet switched network. The common channel signaling data is for transmission over a packet switched network and is then transmitted to a received SG. The receiving SG receives the common channel signal data therefrom.
