Patent number: 8366735Abstract: A thromboembolic removal system for treating ischemic stroke includes an aspiration catheter and an elongate member having a separator on a distal portion of the elongate member. During use of the thromboembolic removal system, the aspiration catheter and elongate member are positioned in a blood vessel, with the elongate member extending through the lumen of the aspiration catheter. Vacuum is applied through the aspiration catheter and the separator is deployed distal to the aspiration catheter into contact with thromboembolic material within a blood vessel. Manipulation of the separator during aspiration can facilitate aspiration by loosening, separating, or softening pieces of thromboembolic material, by removing any clogs or flow restrictions within the lumen of the aspiration catheter, and/or by pushing or plunging loosened material towards and/or into the distal end of the aspiration catheter for subsequent aspiration out of the body.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2005Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Assignee: Penumbra, Inc.Inventors: Arani Bose, Vikas Gupta, Sean Donahue, Delilah Hui

Patent number: 7931659Abstract: A thromboembolic removal system for treating ischemic stroke includes an elongate member and a receiver on a distal portion of the elongate member. The receiver includes structural members arranged to form a sleeve having a central lumen. A plurality of the structural members form engaging elements having apex regions that extend into the central lumen. During use of the thromboembolic removal system, the receiver is advanced over a body of thromboembolic material within a blood vessel, causing the body to be received into the central lumen, and causing the engaging elements to engage the body within the lumen.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2005Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Penumbra, Inc.Inventors: Arani Bose, Vikas Gupta, Sean Donahue, Delilah Hui

Publication number: 20100222864Abstract: A stent designed for catheter delivery to a target neurovascular site via a tortuous path, in a contracted state, and deployment at the target site, in an expanded state, is disclosed. The stent includes a plurality of expandable tubular members, where member is composed of a continuous wire element forming a plurality of wave segments, and segment contains a pair of opposite looped peaks having a wave shape such that the distance between adjacent sides of a wave, on proceeding from a peak toward opposite peaks, increases monotonically with an inflection point therebetween. The expandable tubular members are joined through adjacent peaks by axial connectors. Radial expansion of the stent from a contracted to expanded state is accommodated by movement of adjacent wave-segment peaks away from one another, without significant change in the axial dimension of the stent. Also disclosed are a system incorporating the stent, and a method of treating a neurovascular abnormality.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2010Publication date: September 2, 2010Applicant: BOSTON SCIENTIFIC SCIMED, INC.Inventors: Patrick Rivelli, JR., Alec Piplani, Sean Donahue, Alexander Leynov

Patent number: 7318195Abstract: A mapping system that integrates tactile language (specifically level 1 Braille) with the visual alphanumeric alphabet. A unified tacto-visual form of communication and recording is created. Alphanumeric characters present simultaneous direct relationships between the individual alphanumeric elements and their tactile corollaries within a single form. Segments of each alphanumeric character are configured to meet at points of tactility. Tacto-visual characters comprised of two languages (i.e. Level 1 Braille and the visual alphanumeric character set) are created. Configurations of characters create a legible and readable simultaneous form of communication. The invention provides a tactile surface for blind readers to engage with a visual source for full vision readers and a hybrid for low vision readers. Tactile communication can occupy a same location as the alphanumeric visual communication thereby providing an interface for both the visually-impaired and the full-vision user.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2003Date of Patent: January 8, 2008Inventor: Sean Donahue

Patent number: 7294137Abstract: A device and method for permitting multi-modal treatment of vascular lesions are disclosed. The device includes an outer delivery catheter, an inner delivery catheter, and a guidewire. The catheter is designed to pass through the inner lumen of the outer delivery catheter, and the guidewire is designed to pass through the inner lumen of the inner delivery catheter. A stent may be loaded inside the outer delivery catheter, with the distal tip of the inner delivery catheter abutting against the proximal end of the self-expanding stent, for pushing the stent distally through the outer delivery catheter.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2002Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: Boston Scientific ScimedInventors: Patrick Rivelli, Jr., Alec Piplani, Sean Donahue, Arani Bose, Alexander Leynov
