  • Patent number: 8234739
Abstract: Scrubbing apparatus is configured by methods so that discs are quickly cleaned and conveyed by selecting a total number of spiral brush segments, rates of brush rotation, and a pitch length of a helical junction that receives discs for cleaning and transport. A time period for cleaning and transporting discs depends on the pitch length, rotational speed and configurations of the segments. An increase of the cleaning time period may result from use of an increased number of brush segments. A group of discs is cleaned by the same spiral brush, by one-by-one insertion of the discs into the junctions, and transporting the discs through the same segments.

  • Patent number: 7997289
Abstract: Discs roll along an inclined track through a chamber to expose opposite disc sides for cleaning. Energized fluid directed against the opposite sides removes particles from the discs, the fluid and particles exiting the chamber. Stop pins control a time period for cleaning and transporting the discs by selectively blocking or releasing the discs. The discs are stopped at many sections of a transducer, the sections being tailored to provide various cleaning characteristics. Within the chamber, the chamber is configured to minimize particles that originate other than by being adhered to the disc at a time when the disc is introduced into the chamber. Internal chamber configuration also minimizes retention of particles so that particles removed from one disc do not linger in the chamber for possible transfer to a disc that is cleaned in the same chamber at a later time.

  • Publication number: 20100293810
Abstract: A method for drying a work piece is provided. The method includes raising a plurality of submerged workpieces supported on a first transition arm partially above a fluid/air interface and capturing the plurality of partially submerged workpieces during the raising by a second transition arm located above the fluid/air interface. A system for drying a workpiece is also included.

  • Publication number: 20080066339
Abstract: A system for drying a work piece is provided. The system includes a chamber containing a cleaning fluid in a first portion of the chamber and a drying region. The system includes a wet transition arm configured to support a plurality of work pieces while disposed in the cleaning fluid. A dry transition arn configured to accept the plurality of work pieces from the wet transition arm as the wet transition arm is being raised is also included. The dry transition arm and the wet transition arm are coupled to a common drive mechanism, wherein the common drive mechanism includes a first and a second motor. The first motor is configured to drive both the wet and dry transition arms. The second motor is configured to control an amount of separation between the wet and dry transition arms. A transition arm and method for drying a work piece are provided.

  • Patent number: 7162765
Abstract: An improved cleaning fluid supply housing assembly for a cascade-type substrate scrubber having a sliding piston configured with a flange with recesses so that the piston is out of contact with the rotating part of the brush core mandrel bearing assembly. Rather, the piston flange outer face only contacts the stationary outer race of the mandrel bearing. The water supply piston is also configured with a full bore to minimize the pressure on the end of the mandrel. A tolerance-controlled leak through the bearing is provided by the configuration of the piston flange to provide a flushing of the area in which wear might be a source of particle generation by a controlled tolerance leak upstream of the brushes. These features substantially eliminate the source of particle generation from contact wear and the contribution of such wear particles into the interface between the brush and the substrate surface being cleaned.

  • Patent number: 7160172
Abstract: Multi-disk processing system and method of continuous finishing of memory media disks for digital data storage systems in preparation for magnetic memory coating, comprising four main sub-systems: 1) multiple driven spindles mounted on a chassis, at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions; 2) finishing tape head units mounted on a base; 3) a robotic handler for loading and unloading disks onto/off at least one of the spindles; and 4) a programmable system controller that controls the sub-system operations and loading/unloading. The tape head sub-system includes its own programmable controller and sensors for control of the finishing tape advance. The multiple spindles and handler rotate relative to each other. In a preferred embodiment, the spindles are mounted on a rotating turntable that also oscillates. Alternately, the spindles are fixed in position and a rotating handler with multiple grippers for simultaneously loading/unloading disks from all spindles at once is used.
