  • Patent number: 5679399
Abstract: Single and multiple layer membranes such as gloves and condoms include one or more deactivating barrier layers and/or indicating layers to indicate to a user membrane breach or the presence of a harmful substance in blood or body fluids. A membrane may include one or more permeable or semipermeable layers to disperse contained substances such as lubricants, biocides, spermicides, or indicators outwardly, and may also include permeable or semipermeable layers to allow transmission of body fluids or other environmental fluids inwardly into contact with an indicating or treating substance. An intermediate layer of a multi-layer membrane may include a substance to wipe, cleanse, sterilize, or otherwise treat a piercing needle. A membrane may include a sealing or coating to entrap indicators or other agents such as biocides therein. A method of making membranes such as gloves results in a double glove having discrete inner or outer layers joined only in a cuff region.

  • Patent number: 5593759
Abstract: A pressure-sensitive structural adhesive is formed by applying a thin layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive to one or both sides of a core layer of partially cured structural adhesive. The pressure-sensitive adhesive provides a tacky surface allowing a temporary bond at room temperature. Upon curing of the construction, the bond properties change to that of a structural adhesive, providing a strong permanent bond. Upon cure, the skin layer or layers of pressure-sensitive adhesive are absorbed into the layer of structural adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5100728
Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive tape comprises a carrier layer having a thickness of 0.25 to 2.0 millimeter and comprising an electron beam cured pressure sensitive adhesive matrix, 10 to 20% by volume low density microspheres and at least one pigment in an amount sufficient to color the tape. Preferably, fumed silica is present in an amount up to 5% by weight. The tape preferably has a kin layer on each side of the carrier layer. The skin layer has a coating thickness of 25 to 125 g/m.sup.2 and comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive matrix free of rigid, low density microspheres. The process comprises first preparing an adhesive composition containing electron beam-curable adhesive polymer matrix, fillers and solvent. The composition is introduced and conveyed through a twin screw extruder. In the extruder, solvent is removed in one or more solvent removal units, and a solvent-free composition is extruded as the carried layer. Skin layers may be co-extruded with the carrier layer.
