    Abstract: Apparatus for incinerating refuse or the like in a furnace where the flue gases of combustion are combined with secondary air for afterburning the gases in an afterburning zone. The flue gases are dammed before entering the afterburning zone so as to increase retention time of the flue gases in a zone of uniform temperature in the furnace space, then are accelerated in a venturi-like manner in the afterburning zone, and then are decelerated in a venturi-like manner in the afterburning zone. Secondary air is injected across the front of the afterburning zone in a direction opposite the flow of the flue gases so as to further increase the retention time of the flue gases in the furnace space, and so that the combustible components entrained in the flue gases are burnt completely before entering the afterburning zone.

The invention also concerns a grate tumbler for the tumbler grate of a trash incineration installation or the like with a hollow shaft and a cylindrical carrier construction, with grate-bar carriers resting upon the carrier construction and grate bars mounted upon the carriers, while the grate bars are mounted upon the grate bar carriers (8) in such fashion that the slit (25) between adjacent grate bars (11) is no greater than 1 mm in width on the combustion-chamber side.

    Abstract: A garbage incinerator comprises a combustion grate, a passage for feeding garbage to be combusted onto the grate, a combustion chamber above the grate, and a flue communicating with the combustion chamber and projecting upwardly therefrom. A nozzle box supplied by a separate blower with compressed air is arranged in the region of the flue and provided with a plurality of nozzles oriented to direct air streams at high speed in at least two directions transverse to each other into the stream of flue gas passing through the flue. Preferably, some of the nozzles are oriented to direct air streams substantially parallel to the wall of the flue, whereas other nozzles are oriented to provide air streams which extend transverse to the direction of the first-mentioned air streams.
