  • Patent number: 5725768
Abstract: Granulocytes can be removed from blood by bringing the blood into contact with a carrier having higher affinity to granulocytes than to lymphocytes. the carrier may preferably be a substance having a contact angle in a range of 55.degree.-95.degree. to water, e.g., polystyrene, cellulose acetate, nylon, polytrifluoroethylene or polyethylene terephthalate. A granulocyte removing apparatus is also disclosed. It comprises a granulocyte-adsorbing portion enclosing therein a carrier having higher affinity to granulocytes than to lymphocytes, a blood inflow port for causing blood to flow into the adsorbing portion, and a blood outflow port for allowing the blood, which has flowed in the adsorbing portion, to flow out of the adsorbing portion.

  • Patent number: 5403719
Abstract: A method for assessing the prognosis of a patient undergoing therapy for cancer by measuring the granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio of the patient's blood and comparing the ratio to a normal range of 1.6.+-.0.6. The prognosis is considered improved when the G/L value is within the range as compared to when it is greater than the same.

  • Patent number: 4534798
Abstract: A blood-partitioning composition comprising a mixture of(1) a thixotropy-imparting agent,(2) a first viscous liquid material having strong interaction with the thixotropy-imparting agent, and(3) a second viscous liquid material having no strong interaction with the thixotropy-imparting agent and having good compatibility with the first viscous liquid material, said composition having a specific gravity at 20.degree. C. of from 1.03 to 1.08, and use of the composition in a method for partitioning a sample of blood.

  • Patent number: 4495312
Abstract: A resin composition comprising(a) a vinyl chloride/ethylene copolymer having an ethylene content in the range of 3 to 12% by weight, an average degree of polymerization in the range of 700 to 2900 and a ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight in the range of from 2.5:1 to 5.5:1,(b) an ethylene/carbon monoxide/vinyl acetate copolymer, and(c) a glycerin ester of a specific epoxidized aliphatic carboxylic acid. This resin composition is suitable for making medical devices, especially bags for storing transfusion fluids, receptacles for storing blood, and tubes for a blood circuit in artificial kidneys.

  • Patent number: 4024213
Abstract: A resin sheet having a porous layered structure useful as an electrode separator for electric cells, said sheet comprising (a) an olefin resin, (b) a finely divided inorganic substance, and (c) at least one substance selected from the group consisting of (i) a water-swellable thermoplastic resin, (ii) a water-insoluble or difficultly water-soluble hydrophilic nonionic surface active agent, and (iii) a water-insoluble difficultly water-soluble hydrophilic anionic surface active agent, said sheet including fine pores arranged throughout its cross section in a plurality of layers, at least some of them forming open cells. The above sheet is prepared by a process comprising fabricating a mixture containing the above components (a), (b) and (c) into a sheet, and stretching the sheet in at least one direction.
