The code reader's CPU provides a code detection area to be used when a restoration section detects a code image from an image pickup area as a frame image stored in memory. This code detection area is determined based on an alignment error between the image pickup element and the code, and a specification of the code. The alignment error may result from the bottom of a slit which specifies a positional relationship between the code and the image pickup element to pick up the code.

    Abstract: Data is recorded on a data recording medium as a code that can be optically read by using a manual scanning process. Images to be recorded on the periphery of the code include codes, images, texts, etc., and they respectively have attributes such as the shape, color and density. Then, depending on these attributes, the images are classified into those which cause adverse effects when read together with the code and those which do not cause any adverse effects, and the former images are referred to as interference images, and the latter images are referred to as non-interference image. Here, upon recording the above-mentioned code, on the periphery of the code is placed a non-interference area from which any of interference images having attributes (shape, color, density) that cause adverse effects upon reading the code are not allowed to exist. Any image other than the interference images, that is, any non-interference image, can be recorded within the non-interference area.

    Abstract: A representative marker sensing section senses one representative marker from a frame shot by an image input section. A pattern dot sensing section senses pattern dots on the basis of the representative marker. A data dot reading point determining section determines reading points. With this configuration, once one representative marker has been sensed from the imaging frame, pattern dots are sensed on the basis of the representative marker and data reading points are calculated. This not only avoids an adverse effect of the disappearance of markers or the occurrence of erroneous markers and prevents the block data from being partially lost but also reduces the marker sensing process, avoids code reproduction failure, and speeds up the processing.

The reference dot detection section binarizes the image signal with a predetermined threshold value prior to generating binarized data to detect a reference dot from a binarized code image. The dot area measuring section measures the area of the reference dot detected by the reference dot detection section. The threshold value modifying section modifies the threshold value for binarization in such a manner that the area measured by the dot area measuring section approaches a predetermined target value. The threshold value determining section binarizes the image signal with the threshold value modified by the threshold value modifying section.
