  • Patent number: 7876300
Abstract: A driving method and apparatus for a liquid crystal display uses a comparison between the previous frame and the current frame to expand the contrast ratio and reduce the manufacturing cost. A limited amount of data from the current image may be used: either using a limited area of the image or merely the amount of green in the overall image or the limited area. In the apparatus, an image signal modulator expands the contrast of the input data when the previous image is analogous to the current image to thereby generate output data. A timing controller re-arranges the output data to apply the output data to a data driver.

  • Patent number: 7847782
Abstract: A driving method and apparatus for a liquid crystal display is provided in which a contrast ratio of data to be displayed can be expanded and the brightness of a back light can be changed using an accumulated result of a plurality of frames. In the driving method, data to be displayed is converted into brightness components and arranged into a histogram for each frame. Second data having an expanded contrast is generated using the histograms of at least two frames, including the histogram of the current frame. Averages of the histograms are calculated and used to control the brightness of the back light. The averages may be weighted such that frames closer to the current frame have a larger effect.

  • Patent number: 7688294
Abstract: A method of driving a liquid crystal display is provided in which the contrast can be selectively emphasized dependent upon the input data. The input data is converted into brightness components and chrominance components. The most-frequent brightness component is extracted from a histogram of the brightness components, and the histogram is divided into regions, which are re-arranged in correspondence with the extracted most-frequent value. The brightness components of each region are then modified using a curve having a slope that is dependent upon the total number of brightness components in the particular region. Data in which the contrast ratio has been selectively emphasized is generated using the modulated brightness components and the chrominance components.

  • Patent number: 7522135
Abstract: A driving method and apparatus for a liquid crystal display capable of selectively emphasizing a contrast is disclosed. In the apparatus, an image signal modulator partially expands or reduces the contrast of input data to generate output data. The brightness components for one frame are divided into a plurality of areas and an area having a large brightness difference is removed from each area to thereby produce new data. Gray levels of the new data are divided into a plurality of regions of different slopes. The range of output gray levels is enlarged in proportion to the slopes, thereby partially emphasizing the contrast ratio. A timing controller re-arranges the output data to apply it to a data driver.

  • Patent number: 7466301
Abstract: A driving method and apparatus for a liquid crystal display stabilizing variations in the brightness of a back light dependent upon brightness components extracted from data to be displayed are disclosed. In the method, the brightness components of each frame are arranged into a histogram, which is divided into a plurality of brightness areas. The most-frequent value of the brightness components or the average value of the brightness components is extracted. The brightness of a back light is controlled to correspond to the brightness areas to which the extracted most-frequent value or the average value belongs. One or more particular areas within the brightness areas are selected such that if the extracted most-frequent value or the average value belongs to the particular areas, the brightness of the back light may not be changed in successive frames.

  • Patent number: 7450104
Abstract: A driving method and apparatus for a liquid crystal display are disclosed that stabilizes the variation of the brightness of a back light in correspondence with data to be displayed. In the method, the data is converted into brightness components. The brightness components are divided into a plurality of brightness areas. The brightness components are arranged into a histogram for each frame and thereafter a control value of a most-frequent value or average value of the histogram is extracted. The extracted control value is stored along with other control values including the extracted control value of a frame prior to the control value of the current frame by at least two frames. The brightness of the back light is controlled using the extracted control value of the current frame and one or more of the other stored control values.
