  • Patent number: 7704603
Abstract: The present invention relates to a liquid resin intended more particularly for the sizing of mineral fibers which exhibits a dilutability in water at 20° C. at least equal to 1 000% and a level of free formaldehyde preferably of less than 0.4%, expressed as total weight of liquid, this resin being characterized in that it is composed essentially of condensates obtained from a phenolic compound, from formaldehyde and from an aminoalcohol according to the Mannich reaction. The invention also relates to a sizing composition including said resin, to the mineral fibers sized by means of this composition and to the products formed from the mineral fibers, in particular for thermal and/or sound insulation.

  • Patent number: 6646094
Abstract: A phenol-formaldehyde resole resin is prepared using a high level of catalyst at a polymerization temperature of about 63° C. The endpoint, measured by salt water tolerance, is selected so that the resulting resin has a water dilutability of 20:1 at neutral pH after storage for three weeks at a temperature of about 13° C., with a free phenol level of no more than 0.50 percent.

  • Patent number: 6395819
Abstract: A sizing composition which is a phenol-formaldehyde resin substantially free of urea or of a urea derivative and which has reduced emissions of isocyanates upon heating. Insulation products based on mineral wool, especially glass wool or rock wool, which are suitable for mass-produced thermal appliances and contain the sizing composition have reduced organic emissions during manufacturing and when used in thermal appliances.

  • Patent number: 6342271
Abstract: The invention relates to a resin composition based on a urea-modified phenol-formaldehyde resole which has a formaldehyde/phenol molar ratio of 2 to 5, exhibiting a free formaldehyde content lower than or equal to 3 percent (by weight relative to the total weight of the composition), a free phenol content lower than or equal to 0.5 percent and a dilutability measured at 20° C., of at least 1000 percent and to a process for the preparation of this composition. This composition is characterized in that it contains an overcondensed resole obtained by the condensation of phenol, of formaldehyde, and optionally of urea in basic medium, until the product has a water dilutability at pH 9 that is lower than or equal to 2000 percent, or the product of neutralization of such as resole. The modification of an overcondensed phenolic resole by neutralization with boric acid according to the invention permits the dilutability of the resole to be increased.
