    Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for modulating Mdm2 activity by altering the level of sumoylation and ubiquitination of the Mdm2 protein, which in turn may modulate p53 activity. The invention further provides methods of detecting sumoylation of Mdm2, an assay system for identifying a test compound that regulates sumoylation of Mdm2, and a method of treating a condition of uncontrolled cell growth.
