  • Publication number: 20170258444
Abstract: A whole-body hydration monitor detects the velocity of sound in soft tissues, which is used to determine the hydration status of a body. A set or interchangeable ultrasonic probes is provided to be easily mounted on a housing containing a controller. Each ultrasonic probe features a pair of ultrasonic transducers facing each other and spaced apart at a predetermined distance defining the acoustic base. The controller is configured to send at least one ultrasonic pulse from an emitting transducer and detect the propagation time upon arrival to the receiving transducer. Ultrasound velocity is determined using the measured propagation time and a known acoustic base of the currently connected ultrasonic probe. Magnetic connection provides for easy detachment of one probe and attachment of another with a greater or smaller acoustic base depending on the size of the muscle selected for hydration determination.

  • Patent number: 7931588
Abstract: A comprehensive system for objective assessment of colonoscope manipulation includes a handgrip for collecting and transmitting colonoscope handling data including force and motion data; a patient pain monitor for collecting and transmitting data on the level of patient's pain and discomfort; and digital processing means for extracting useful features such as colonoscope tip advancement speed from colonoscope-provided video images. All data is wirelessly transmitted to an electronic unit for processing and displaying on a monitor. A colonoscopy procedure is properly conducted when certain shaft advancement causes appropriate tip advancement, all without an increased level of patient's pain. The system of the invention is aimed at providing objective assessment data allowing for safer and less painful colonoscopies.

  • Publication number: 20110066078
Abstract: A pain monitor for a patient undergoing a medical procedure includes a housing adapted to fit in a hand of the patient, a force sensor, and a battery-powered data processor. The patient is instructed to squeeze the housing with a force representing his level of pain. That force is measured by the sensor, acquired by the data processor and then wirelessly transmitted to an outside data receiver for further processing and recording. This device allows the patient to non-verbally express his perception of the level of pain which in turn allows a physician to adjust the course of the procedure or the level of pain-reducing medication. The pain monitor of the invention is particularly useful during a colonoscopy procedure.

  • Patent number: 7307730
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to an improved method and apparatus for measurement of properties of a sample as a function of temperature. The method and apparatus are based on formation of a stable temperature gradient through the holding fixture such as a cell or a plate containing the sample under study, measurement of the property of interest as a function of position, and relating the positions of the measurements to the temperature of the studied sample at that position. In the preferred application, thermal and thermodynamic properties of solutes are obtained. Provisions are described to combine optical interrogation with Raman spectroscopy. Alternate technique of interrogation is total internal fluorescence reflection. Chemical reaction rates as function of temperature can be advantageously studied including reactions catalyzed by enzymes.

  • Patent number: 6981945
Abstract: A handgrip for a colonoscope shaft capable of measuring and presenting to the operator of radial and longitudinal forces applied by the operator during the manipulation with the colonoscope. The handgrip includes an internal sleeve positioned over the shaft of the colonoscope so that it can be released and repositioned by depressing a release button. And external sleeve covers the internal sleeve and provides for a convenient grip by the operator. The only means of transmission of force applied by the operator from the external sleeve to the internal sleeve is the engaging means such as a flexible rectangular bar or a set of engaging plates imbedded between the external sleeve and internal sleeve. The engaging means are equipped with a set of sensors such as strain gages positioned on all sides of the bar to measure the forces between the sleeves, which correspond to the forces applied by the operator to the shaft of the colonoscope.
