  • Publication number: 20060078070
Abstract: A carrier phase and symbol timing recovery circuit and method may be used for robust synchronization in a broadcasting ATSC receiving system. Carrier phase and symbol timing offsets may be simultaneously adjusted by using redundancy information contained in an ATSC signal spectrum. A desired sampling time instant and carrier phase offset for synchronization may be simultaneously obtained due to correlation between carrier phase and symbol timing detectors.

  • Publication number: 20060077300
Abstract: A digital television (DTV) receiver is provided, comprising: a demodulator that demodulates television signals and outputs equalizer training signals in the form of real (I) and imaginary (Q) data; a sync signal detector, and a phase compensator that offsets the phase of the I and Q data based on the phase offset signal and outputs phase adjusted I data under control of the lock control signal. The sync signal detector comprises: a correlator that correlates the equalizer training signals including the I and Q data; a power calculator that calculates the sum of the power of the correlated I and Q data; a comparator that compares (the sum) against a preset threshold and outputs a compare indication signal; a sync lock controller that monitors the compare indication signal and outputs a lock control signal; and a phase calculator that calculates a phase of the equalizer training signals based on the I and Q data and outputs a phase offset signal based on the compare indication signal.

  • Publication number: 20050254598
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide a receiver, a generator, an error-averager, and a determiner and methods for the same. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, cyclical characteristics of a signal may be used to obtain an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Exemplary embodiments of the generator may generate a signal output from an equalizer and may transmit the signal to a decoder, which may calculate a metric. The signal may be proportional to the reliability of a symbol.

  • Publication number: 20050213692
Abstract: A method reduces noise in a multiple carrier modulated (MCM) signal. Such a method may include: estimating impulse noise based in the equalized signal; and removing a portion of the noise in the equalized signal as a function of the estimated impulse noise. An apparatus reduces noise in the MCM. Such an apparatus may include: a down-converter; an analog to digital converter to digitize the output of the down-converter; a guard-interval removing unit operable upon the digitized output of the down-converter; and a combined FFT, equalization and impulse-noise-compensation unit operable upon a signal from the guard-interval-removing unit.

  • Publication number: 20050175081
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide an equalizer combined with a decoder and a method of updating filter coefficients. The method may include calculating output error signals ek, multiplying the output error signals by a parameter, obtaining a partial value by multiplying a delayed decoder decision stored in a filter delay line corresponding to an i-th filter coefficient by the result obtaining a partial value by multiplying a constant by a feedback coefficient and obtaining an updated value by adding the two partial values.

  • Publication number: 20050089125
Abstract: An apparatus for compensating nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals, a multicarrier signal receiver using the same, and a method therefor are provided, where the apparatus for compensating multicarrier signals and the multicarrier signal receiver using the apparatus extract parameter information on the HPA mode from the received signal so that nonlinear distortion of the received multicarrier signal is compensated for even though an accurate transfer function of a high power amplifier (HPA) is not known and side information or a special training signal is not transmitted when a signal is transmitted, such that nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals such as OFDM signals transmitted by an HPA having a variety of transfer functions can be adaptively compensated and therefore a demodulated signal with an improved symbol error rate (SER) can be obtained.

  • Publication number: 20050069054
Abstract: A method an apparatus for providing channel state information in a receiver are described. In the method, direct channel state information may be generated based on a calculated error signal, and indirect channel state information may be generated based on a magnitude of a channel frequency response. A channel state selection control signal is generated based on the calculated error signal and magnitude of the channel frequency response. One of the direct channel state information and indirect channel state information may be output based on a logic state of the channel state selection control signal.

  • Publication number: 20050008084
Abstract: An apparatus and method for direct measurement of the channel state of a receiver, such as an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) receiver. The apparatus adapts a frequency selective channel using a squared Euclidean distance between a received signal value and a de-mapped value for measurement of the channel state and estimates the CSI (Channel State Information) which is also suitable for signal processing with co-channel interference. The estimated CSI may be used in a bit metric calculation of subsequent error correction decoders, such as a Viterbi decoder, to increase system SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) gain. Because receiving equipment, such as digital televisions, receive clearer DVB-T (Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting) signals, clearer pictures with less distortion can be displayed, for example, on the digital television.
